We actually pronounce G's as G's, not always as 'H'. With Gaborone we pronounce the 'G' as 'G' and NOT as a 'H'

Well, I guess that is open to debate. Perhaps it is said both ways. As an American, I would naturally pronounce it as a "g." BUT, 100 percent of the people I spoke with (and asked) pronounced it like an "h."

Thanks for the response. Allow me to clarify. We do sometimes pronounce 'G' as 'H' but with some words such as the capital city Gaborone, we NEVER. I am not saying the report is false but truth be told, I have NEVER head someone pronouce Gaborone as Haborone. The Batswana and Basotho are related, THEY (Basotho) usually use 'H' where we use 'G' [our languages are mutually intelligible]. Maybe it was fashionable to pronounce Gaborone as Haborone when the doc was made. Who knows... (I'm thinking of making a non-commentary documentary on Gaborone showing various locations of the city. Any suggestions?) [BTW, I'm a vlogger so you may see changes to the city on my channel if you fancy it].

About 50 seconds into the documentary, you will hear an introduction. It is being read by a native of the country. She says, "Haba-Rony." I had heard of that pronunciation from a former Honorary Consul to Botswana, based in Los Angeles. He lived there for a year or so around the time of independence. The documentary is "in memory" to him, since he has since died. I asked almost everyone I interviewed, in Gaborone, how the city was pronounced. I repeat, all of them said, "H" not "G." That is simply what happened. -------- Were can I find your vlog??

@@GlobalistFilms The G is pronounced very similarly to the French R. The sound also exists in Afrikaans Just softer. Of coarse, a tongue tied person is better of pronouncing it like an H.

I asked ten locals (on camera) heard 10 others say it the way I explained it in the documentary. I did not make that up, I simply asked people who live there.

mofine23 They were not wrong! Pronouncing 'G' in Gaborone like 'H', Haborone, is the closest you get to the way we, Batswana, pronounce Gaborone! Just listen to the way Lesang Magang pronounces it in the video!
