I would never want to be buried in the ground; what if you were alive when they buried you. Also just the thought of being put in the ground is creepy. Worms insects & whoever else. Reminds me of that movie, the premature burial. In the oven you go up in flames 🔥 right away. Probably goes so fast you wouldn't feel it. Hopefully you get embalmed before going in oven.

Thank you and I just love it! When I taught Indiana history many many years ago we would always do a unit on cemeteries and graveyards so the kids could understand more when they went to visit. We found one story in Indiana that a wealthy man died? And was placed in a mausoleum. He was so afraid of being buried alive that in his Mausoleum he installed a telephone and had a small table a rocking chair a bottle of brandy or scotch and a cigar. So if he was buried alive he could get out of his casket call up the people and sit and enjoy a drink and a smoke rocking until they came and got him. My students loved it and a few of them even brought up the idea that they were going to be buried with cell phone so they could call somebody and then still play games. I believe about 30 or 40 years ago they finally disconnected the telephone at the mausoleum. Again, thank you I love when you take us along on your Journeys!

If you don't know yet, there is a difference between the both, Cemeteries are stand alone while Graveyards are on a Church property....usually. When I talk about my passion for this to people, some get excited and engaged with me talking about it, while some look at me as if they are seeing an image of Wednesday of the Adams family standing in front of them! LOL Never imagined to search for people like me here in KZitem. It was just a fluke that Faces of the Forgotten channel came up in my suggested videos. KZitem is so full of junk content creators, that I get kinda disgusted with KZitem. But, today I am thankful, because I found my Tribe! Thank you to you both! 💕

FYI the unmarked stone, or sometimes just a big rock, in older cemeteries are often the grave of a slave. They will mostly be positioned at the bottom of family plots. Sometimes you will find them buried beside family. This signified the family considered them family.

Learn something new eachday..so intriguing. I found this in a write up about slave grave markers. ( “Some of them are in the shape of a human eye, kind of like an oval with points on the end.” According to local African-American families, growing up they were told that the purpose of this rock shape was to symbolize that the eyes of the dead watch over the living.)

Thankyou for buying headstones for some of those that do not gave them. Thats some thing that bothered my mom and aunt a lot. Moms husband didnt have one for years and mom finally saved enough to get him one. Ive never seen it but i remember her saying it was smallbut at least he had one. She was gone about 4 yrs when i finally was able to buy her one. It was small but it cost me about $500 or $600. But at least she finally had one. Mom always said she couldnt afford insurance and didnt want buried by the state. So keeping our promise that we would do our best my older brother and i sold her old coins and i put in my $3,000 in savings to get her funeral and burial and all paid for. we just couldnt pay for a stone. Our other brother did not help in any way. My aunt was so happy when she saw i had mom a stone finally after 4 yrs. She often mentioned wishing my younger brother and i would buy mom a stone. Our older brother passed 14 months after mom. He had insurance.

I remember reading about those coffins. A big reason for live burial was because alcohol was often drank from pewter cups. Alcohol mixing with pewter can eventually lead to a coma like state. Without sophisticated machinery, there was no way to ascertain whether you were alive or dead. Even now, some are pronounced only to wake up again. The wake was held as a means of determining if the person was truly dead. For three days, they would lie in their coffin and people would take turns watching over it to see if the person woke up.

For a rural cemetery, it’s fairly large. When I was in mortuary school, it was said the mirror was a way to determine death as well as placing a hot scalpel on skin to see if a blister appears or injection of ammonia under skin to see if redness would appear. Much different then today. Also undertaker would go to residence to embalm body and deceased would lie in state in their home.

I live in Texarkana which is a twin city and mobsters came here often after visiting the hot springs in Arkansas and there are two main old cemeteries in the heart of town with the most beautiful headstones and beautiful angels. I hate that the older cemeteries often are not taken care of like they should since there are no new burials in them. There is one near me in England. The vicar of a village church in the 19th century was scared of being buried alive. On his death, his unsealed coffin was buried in a tabletop tomb, a flask of wine and loaf of bread left inside. Rather than stone, the end of the tombstone was an iron door. A key was left inside the tomb and the door locked from outside. He never did reappear and the keyhole was was sealed!

my mom would have absolutely loved your channels from the time I was very small my mom used to go out in rides w exploring old cemeteries. we live in new england so they are all over the place. I grew up in Newtown CT and there are lots right in town I remember taking a grave rubbing group with her at age 10. some people thought it was quite morbid but I totally loved it it definitely helped my love of history or rather quenched by hunger for learning. it's like a sub chapter to history. they are all stories. I'm 40 yrs old but I grew up right down the road from St Rose cemetery in sandy hook CT and lots of family going back are in there. my mom's ancestor was the first person interred. I spent many many many hours of my childhood playing there and it was not one but strange or weird. I felt so safe there actually. I've been to others where I've felt different things, for different reasons, that's a whole other conversation haha. anyway Easton cemetery on rt 25 imonroe was quite notorious I remember going there. the warrens made that one famous. anyway my mom went on long rides exploring old cemeteries she had photo albums of them and anyway my mom and dad both died July and August 2020. I really miss her and your channel makes me feel like I'm still exploring. I wish I could. thanks so much for all you do and it's nice to know there's other folks that would look in the window that looks 6ft down to a man that was afraid to be buried alive. that fear was almost an epidemic of sorts back in the days probably farther back it was more prevalent. you can find stories of folks awaking on the slab even still today. so scary to think about. sorry for writing you a novella lol much love to you 💙

I am from the Netherlands and found your channel 2 weeks ago. I love to listen to your stories and backgrounds of the graves of people you visit. We are in lockdown and curfew at least until februari 10th. So watching your channel has been a lot more interesting than any tv channel. As soon as I watched the first video within 5 minutes into it I hit the subscribe button. Did not know you only started it about 6 months ago though. I sure hope this channel will grow because you not only cover famous people but ordinary people as wel. And you have stories about them if you can, I thank you for that. I wish you a speedy recovery after your surgery and an interesting 2021 Greetings from the Netherlands

So happy for this recommendation on KZitem. I love going through cemeteries. Did you know that a lot of the really old cemeteries have native to the area plants and trees that attract all kinds of birds and wildlife? I really enjoy driving through with my binoculars and just looking around. I've seen lots of birds and marked off sightings in my bird book driving through cemeteries. Plus I've seen my share of rare foxes. And some cemeteries have very unique and interesting graves. That make you stop get out and pay your respects. I have garden tools for my own family plots in my car but I often if need be weed out someone's lillies. Anyway I love your channel so far. MARY WORTH!!!! and Bachelors Grove are still on my bucket list but I loved your videos of them. In this video you pose the question why did Mr Black choose this spot. I bet someone knows why he chose this spot. Maybe its a half way point or maybe there was really good farm land around there. Or maybe it was a prairie heaven on earth place that was so beautiful and so peaceful that he was drawn to it and had to settle there.

I really like this channel! I think graveyards ( I’m British ) and cemeteries are very interesting. I like exploring them.. Especially the really old ones. In U.K. our graveyards are next to a Church. I love the Angel statues and the history and everything about these beautiful Cemeteries. I like the peace and quiet too.

I ABSOLUTELY love this channel!! I too like reading grave inscriptions as the people buried were once alive and are part of our history!! A lot of people think I'm crazy, but who cares!! I've subscribed, and am looking forward to watching all of your videos!! Best wishes from the UK!!

Hey Ron look up the GRAVE OF FLORENCE IRENE FORD, she was 10 when she died and he mother insisted that they build stairs so she could go down to see her daughter through a window and sing or read to her when it was storming! They say you can still go there and open the door and go down inside! Very interesting, it's in Mississippi!

Oh Tammy, yeah that sounds like a really good one. I’ll look it up. Thank you for the tip. I will be coming through the area on the way to New Orleans of course and I’ll try to head over there if we can find the cemetery.

When visiting Adoptive mum in Richmond, UK, I took our new Whippet to the large Cemetery next to Richmond Park...It isn't especially old, just 1906 , but both my parents are buried there ... On a sunny day it is nice to walk around, and there is a Taxi Driver's Grave that is interesting and he has his Cat buried there with him ...Our dad has our cat with him, as well. The ancient graveyards in UK are often unreadable due to spalling of the stone, but 1666 era inscriptions are occasionally visible in very old yards.

Wow I just can't imagine being buried in a coffin, six foot under earth and still be alive,I quess you would die eventually from starvation, fear or suffocation. I doubt you would get out of there alone.

You would love my local cemetery. It was original part of the local church which was built and is documented from the 13th c. The first actual stones that can currently be found dates to 1546 and there are numerous from the 17th, 17th and 18th centuries. When I was younger I used to go up regularly and do grave rubbings.

Thank you for your educational videos and the back stories on them and putting all your time travelling all over to different places to different graveyards to show us all that graveyards are amazing and beautiful and I also really appreciate the way you have so much respect for the people that is buried and not standing all over their graves, here in Ireland if we stood on people's graves oh God help us we'd get such a Clip on the back of the head we'd soon never forget 😅 and always reminded to have manners. Thank you Face of the forgotten and I want to say A Big Big Hello from Ireland to you my friend.. 🤗😊..
