My dad was one of the lead rescuers on the Utah County Search and Rescue team that responded to Nutty Putty. My dad was one of the last people to talk to John alive. He seemed to come to terms that this was the end, and fell unconscious shortly after. After he became unresponsive the rescue efforts went from astronomically difficult to impossible. The rescuers left the cave after more hours of trying with anything they could, and shared in a prayer with the family. Every year on Thanksgiving weekend you can always catch my dad in some corner of the house by himself thinking about John. Rest in Peace John. It is because of you that my dad and many members of that Utah County team felt inspired to pay many thousands of dollars to go to the most advanced trench, collapsed, and cave rescues courses and schools that exist within the United States, and as a result, dozens of people were saved.

No more planes cause they may crash and first responders may die trying to rescuing you. Hmmm no more dryers in homes because they cause thousands of fires a year. Wow your logic sucks. People need the freedom to explore and entertain themselves. Not only that but there are very few deaths like his. He was no longer a skinny kid. He was a 200 lb man who hasn't been in a cave in years and he made mistakes. We all shouldn't suffer because he died. Life is dangerous. We all will die. Even you. We can't just stop doing things because someone might get hurt. First responders KNOW what they do is dangerous. Saving people is a dangerous business. I did it for years and yet I wouldn't want everyone to not have access to caves and mountains and airplanes ect ect just because someone might get stuck and I might die trying to save them. @@na3rial I understand that, and I partake in one of those as well (I race dirt bikes and ride harleys) the difference is that the assumed risk is much more digestible when considering 1. You could say that this hobby might’ve been worth the adrenaline and feeling from doing it, but to me personally the assumed risk is too high to make it justified. There are three areas on Earth where recovering the remains of people who have died is simply too dangerous to attempt: The tops of tall mountains, inside of underwater caves, and inside of above-water caves. There are still explorers who died on Mount Everest in a seated position inside of an ice cave that mountaineers have to pass every time they climb, a reminder that, if you die up there, no one is coming to claim your body. I saw a video about a diver who could not be recovered after he got lost exploring an undersea cave. That cave is now his tomb. The Nutty Putty caves are now this man's tomb as well. I went to the Nutty Putty caves back in 2000. One of the girls I went with got stuck for a while. She managed to wriggle free eventually. That was terrifying enough. Also there were scorpions in there. I didn’t think I was claustrophobic before I went in there, but being trapped in tight crawl spaces with scorpions? Man, that’s something else. There’s a movie about John’s Story: The Final Descent. Such a sad story.

@Out Side I've been exploring caves all my life, and for me, it's fascinating to see structures and formations that are so ancient, and yet so rarely seen IRL. Especially wild caves, where we can sometimes even discover whole new passageways no one knew existed. However, I'm extremely small and flexible (this profile pic is me) compared to John, who was 6' and 200 pounds. John was used to exploring caves as a high school student, but this time he was a large adult, and I don't think he thought about how much a difference that makes. 😕

It was once legal to drive under the influence and when it was made illegal some people thought it was an infringement on individual freedom. These are the same types of people who insisted that a cave system, that was repeatedly proven to be dangerous, should stay open to public use, insisting that closing it is infringing on personal liberties. Safety laws and regulations exist for a reason, and they usually fall into place only after disaster happens. The fact that someone said they'd never heard of any dangerous incidents occurring in the cave before just proves that they did not research or think anywhere beyond their own selfish desires when addressing the issue of the closure.

Agreed. It's also never just about yourself. In this case, several rescuers risked their lives and were injured in their attempts to save him and his child was left without a father. And so many innocents are killed by drunk drivers every year. Making risky choices can affect, hurt, and even kill the people around you (loved ones, rescuers, innocent bystanders), so of course not everyone should be given free reign all the time!

My father was a High Angle/Confined space rescuer for 20 years and had to rescue people in these types of situations. I asked what went wrong with the rescue on this one? How come they couldn't get him out? He said there was many reason why it all went wrong, the local rescue team that arrived to help was to stubborn to realize they didnt know how to get him out and refused to call for outside help, They werent trained properly on these types of rescues, but his biggest answer was they were trying to do everything they can to not hurt him. And when I asked wouldnt you not want to hurt him either and he said, at first yes you do what you can but if all attempts fail then just rip out and worry about injuries later because at least he wont be in the hole anymore. He always told me remember little Jessica stuck in the well, they tried to pull her out safely but when they couldnt do that a pracademic just grabbed her leg and pulled her and yes he broker her leg when he did that but she is alive today.

But being stuck upside down unable to move slowly realising that you may never get out and then just when you're face to face with your rescuers and start being pulled out, you fall back down. To this day I never understood why this part of the cave was never blocked off.. they knew it led to a dead end fissure yet they left it open. Blows my mind, especially after all of the accidents that caused "experts" to reassess the safety of the cave. Probably would've saved his life.

LMAO give me a break, blaming them for not "blocking it off" how about these morons go ride a bike, watch tv, workout, instead of putting them selves in those positions . THey already blocked the cave off, and a bunch of idiots decided to bitch and moan about it.... okay cool, then have at it. Now youre going to complain why didnt they shimmy down through the entire cave, and jsut block off the areas "too dangerous" LMFAO why should someone go down, and risk their life for that? when they can just block the entrance. He has NO ONE to blame for this, other than himself. Plain and simple

@@catherineoconnor7109 cemetery’s are to bury dead bodies, dumping grounds for human carcasses. Personally I have only ever been into one or two, but they are a thing of the passed. Bodies are cremated nowadays, nothing left! You going to visit the furnace every once in a while? When people die, they are buried or burned. Why visit gravesites? No matter what you think, there’s no one there! Of course, if there’s a body, still lieing around that can be seen and not retrieved, well that’s a difficult situation , it might drive a mind insane. That’s an extremely rare situation though. I wouldn’t know how to deal with a body in a cave, but there’s no family members wiggling their way through those dangerous tunnels to visit an ever decaying corpse, is there? There are dead bodies littering high mountains, Everest for instance? You have to step over them to to climb the mountain. Their families don’t visit? I have never visited a grave nor will I ever. Nor, I hope will anyone waste their previous time visiting mine.

I can't even begin to comprehend that someone actually experienced this. Just imagine the glimmer of hope John would have had each time the rescuers devised a new plan to get him out only for said plans to fail one by one and the soul crushing reality sinking in that maybe this will be the end. It's truly horrific. The fact his body will stay down there forever is haunting.

That poor man, he took a wrong turn and it cost him his life, his poor wife trying to ease his fears, and the rescuers that risked their lives; a tragedy for all involved. How sad that he was left there, so close to life whilst so close to death; what an awful circumstance. God Bless his soul and his family. I was hoping for a more positive outcome.

I did some research on this. Turns out there was a teenager named Brock Clark who got stuck in the EXACT same section that John Jones died in 5 years earlier. After 15 hours of being stuck upside down they were able to yank him out with a harness & ropes. He lost all feeling on one side of his body but was able to fully recover in the hospital.

@@jackfox5738 The cement plug is at the main entrance so the entire cave is closed. Also, at the location of John's body the ceiling was blasted effectively burying him in rubble permanently. I can't remember where I saw that. I've watched several videos and read a few reports on all this.
