Burmese newspapers have reported that more than 6,000 members of
drug-king Khun Sa's Mong Tai Army have surrendered to government
forces. Troops of the opium warlord's ethnic Shan independence
movement have been surrendering en masse since their leader
apparently gave himself up to military authorities on January 5,
according to observers. Western drug enforcement officers have said Khun Sa, alias Chang Shi-Fu, controls half the heroin output of the Golden Triangle area of Burma, Thailand and Laos. He faces criminal charges in the United States as an alleged major drug trafficker.
