Burning crop residue is a crime under section 188 of the IPC and under the Air and Pollution control Act of 1981.
It not only pollutes the air but also destroys the fertility of the land.
Unfortunately most farmers in India can’t afford the legitimate ways to clear their fields.
Stubble farming (burning agricultural residues) has multiple negative effects including local air pollution, increase in black carbon and contributions to regional and global climate change.
Despite an order from the highest court in India for an immediate halt to the practice, many farmers feel like they have no choice but to burn the crop residue in order to prepare the fields in time for wheat sowing season.
The video outlines the farmers practising stubble farming in one of the villages.
