PS. I think I forgot to mention the scale length is 24.75" (as per Gibson) so it's not short scale in the traditional sense... just shorter than Fender standard 25.5"

I was around in the 60s (yes I am ancient) and if you couldn't afford a Fender or a Gibson there weren't very many gigable cheaper alternatives. This was long before the days of far eastern imports. Burns was one and I suppose Hofner was another. I was still at school but starting to go see local bands and I think virtually every band had at least one Burns player. When I started work a bloke in the office had a 6 string Burns Bass which was a beast! I like this SSJ. It sounds good to me and sounds like the pickups are wired out of phase---big tick! BTW I think the shovel headstock on the Marquee is usually called a Scroll Headstock!

I found your piece on the Burns guitar really interesting. In the ‘70s I had a Hayman neck and a Shergold body which I made into a parts guitar. I found the Shergold factory at Gallows corner Romford and went to buy some parts. They had given up building guitars and were making kitchen cabinets but still had a few bits lying around. The owner was an old guy whose name was Sam Golder and he and his sons had diversified! He told me that he had worked with Burns and then went on his own to form Shergold (and maybe Hayman I’m not sure) guitars. He sold me a few parts and said there was a bin by the door full of old necks and bodies that he let the local kids help themselves to. In there I saw several Burns ‘Flyte’ bodies and all sorts of stuff! The Shergold Modulater was really interesting as you could change the control module for a selection of different pick up combinations. Check it out, it’s really cool but sadly didn’t come to much. Anyway, love your shows, All the best from another old git with a passion for guitars.

A special review, for many reasons - not least of which is my love and affection for the featured brand! I bought a 1962 'Vibra-Artist' from a friend, who himself had one of those Burns 'Flyte' guitars mentioned in the video.(Despite their reputation for original sounding p'ups, he put a pair of DiMarzio humbuckers in it - it was, and still is, a beast!) Because of their reputation in Britain, I did some research into the company, and came to love the guitars - even the 'Bison', with it's enlarged horns! This guitar sounds wonderfully unique, half way between a Jazzmaster and a Tele, and definitely fuller than a Strat's p'ups, but not quite a P90 sound, to my ears. No wonder you enjoyed the guitar so much, which proves there was more to the neck than just an interesting colour! Joy to the world, and good luck to the consortium in bringing this classic British guitar company back to life - again. P.S. Did we really hear you say "as the actress said to the bishop"??!!

Cool they used the zero fret. I used to think zero frets were bananas until I got a beat down Teisco that I reset the fretboard to eliminate back bow and refretted with stainless steel frets. So I had detailed interaction with a zero fret system and now I think they are brilliant. The problem with them originally was soft fret wire that wore through from strings so a replaceable nut was an innovative improvement. But with stainless hard frets that is no longer an issue. Too many players screw up guitars trying to 'upgrade the nut'.

This is not something I'd expect from a guitar costing so little. That big hollow area under the "scratch pate" give a tiny bit of acoustic guitar sound to the SSJ. Yesterday i got my Burns Shadow Marquee From Andertons. The delivery was fast aus duck, but sadly the guitar was faulty. As these reissues of Burns are affordable guitars i was able to tollerate some optical flaws but it the one i got was unplayable by any means. The action was set up very high and the strings especially the 6th E-String and the 5th A-String acted weiredly having huge amplitudes. That thing was buzzing like crazy. As i tried to adjust the action, lock the vibrato-tremolo and change the strings nothing was fixing the problem. I hope Andertons can offer me a refund of my expenses as i wasn‘t expecting this Lack of quality. 😢 It isn‘t your fault guitaristas, just wanted to share my experience. Interesting review. I own three Burns guitars from the time a few years back when Barry Gibson was running the company, a Marvin, a Bison and a Cobra, they are all very well made instruments from the budget Cobra up to the rather expensive Marvin. Like the Short Scale in your review they are a little bit different from the mainstream electric guitar range generally on sale these days. The tremolo on the review guitar is the same as the one used on the old Cobra and Marquee, it owes a lot to Leo Fenders Stratocaster design but the knife edge pivot arrangement is different . From your review seems that the latest Burns guitars are as well made as the Barry Gibson era ones, ( some of the British made originals could be a bit variable in quality to put it politely). I hope that the new owners of the brand continue to keep up the individuality and build quality of Burns guitars.

It could be interesting Burns guitars can be quite quirky. The Bison I own isn’t really that huge, back in the day they sold a “Baby Bison” and I wonder weather my guitar is a recent version of that. It’s quite an interesting guitar with the same really complicated looking tremolo unit as the one used on the Marvin. The oddest thing about it however is that the “horns” sweep forward, I’ve not seen that sort of body sculpting on another solid guitar.

This past year I have been tracking down a little collection of import Burns for myself. Late last fall I got a white 2005 Marquee Bass, club series., also has a (giant) batwing headstock. Then this spring I got a 2015 green Steer Cutaway (which is the weirdest looking fake telecaster ever, the Billy Bragg guitar, with a neck trisonic and a bridge humbucker, and a headstock that looks like an earwig). I love their greenbursts. And from the same Australian collector I got a 2012 Burns Barracuda baritone with the scroll headstock in Guard’s Red. It’s like a Marvin type style with the Res-o-tube trem, also has trisonics. If Andertons puts out some quality reissues, I may get more! Waiting to see what they have up their sleeves!!! Eastwood Guitars in the USA here is releasing a copy of the Burns Flyte next month with two standard humbuckers. Kind eager to see what it’s like. Brian May Guitars makes Red Specials (and other colors and designs of ‘Red Specials’) with Burns Trisonics still. What I’ve been learning recently is that in Japan, along with the Beatles, it was instrumental and surf music that was huge there in the 1960’s, so both The Ventures and The Shadows sold a lot of records there. Along with Fender, Burns and Mosrite designs were copied in particular. I love those first few Yamaha designs like the SG-2, SG-7, etc and you can see the Jazzmaster and Mosrite influence m. But the Burns Bison seems to have been copied a lot by other Japanese brands. Thanks for reviewing this Short Scale Jazz guitar! Really looking forward to that interview you hinted at!!

My dads cousins wife was cousin to Mike Wilsh from Stoke On Trent, he was singer ,song writer bass player and keyboard player from the sixties group the four pennies .they used burns marquee guitars and basses ,back in the day ,they had few decent songs out and one was a chart topping hit called Juliet ..❤oh yes Colin ,I’ve just purchased a mint 2019 SG Standard from Guitar Guitar .apart from a few small marks on the back which you have to look for,it looks like it hardly been played ..

Great review Colin. Apart from the position of the three way that guitar looks great for £300, and does have a sound. I am looking forward to seeing what the Captain does with the brand.

Blimey, the Burns caught me off guard...! Great review. This one defo has a lot of mojo. Your enjoyment of it shines through here. Next time I'm in Andertons this one is on my short list. Great stuff. Btw ur waffling is all part of the enjoyment I think we all get from your videos. Keep it up! Btw 2 I don't think you're a fan of PRS and I get it... but the new Mccarty 594 SE might be right up your street too. Big chunky neck, classic LP style looks and sounds very nice... 🎸👍
