My Dad drove bus for 32 years in city of detroit. He told me he picked up a load of high schooler who didn’t pay… 60 seats on the bus.. overloaded… and none paid. He drove the bus to the 16 th precinct and told the desk sergeant no one paid here are the keys and I am retiring. Then he walked home and was a completely different person the next day. By far bus driving is one of the toughest if not the toughest job. By far. The amount of abuse and threats and lunatics and homeless and drunks and crooks you have to endure. That said, my dad had a stack of cards every Chrismas from grateful passengers but the number of times he had to throw people off the bus or was threatened is another level. God Bless him. Never missed a day and put six of us through school.

I'm a retired trolleybus operator. One day the driver ahead of me had a problem with a large group of HS students (among other things they broke two windows). When I came along he said I didn't have to take them if I didn't want to (he was waiting for an inspector and the police). But I liked a challenge and boarded about 75 of them...almost immediately they started ringing the bell (I couldn't shut it off)...this was part of their daily routine (non-stop ringing)! So I kept driving and not stopping...a couple miles later a few kids made it through the crush and complained I missed their stop. I explained "you ring once for the next stop, twice for the stop after that, etc." I just assumed with all the ringing everyone was going all the way downtown.

I'm not a driver but a frequent passenger. I've always shared the same opinion, all public service workers deserve a huge pay raise. Especially bus drivers, you all have to put up with so much. People disagree saying bus driving is easy, which even if just talking about the driving isn't true, then there's the passengers. I do think it's better that people who are intoxicated or not in a good condition to drive are taking transit instead of driving but I also know those people will be rough to deal with... It's an annoying compromise. I've only been upset with a bus driver once, I raised my voice quite a bit after my requested stop was skipped multiple times and I still feel bad about it. I want to also tell you that not all students are bad news! (even though a lot are), I just want to get to my destination and you all get me there safely, quickly (usually) and for cheap, you deserve all the praise I can give. (Sorry for the paragraph)

Yesterday while on route I went to use the bathroom and got back to my bus two minutes late. One of my regulars said to me, "Way to stay on schedule, Casey Jones." I actually found that really funny since it is a passenger I banter with anyway. But people don't realize how challenging the job can be for bus drivers. I have been in situations before where I wanted to put a stop to passenger behavior that stigmatizes public transit but knew that I had no teeth. The rider acting out would complain to the company and I would be the one in trouble. The turns are the easy part of the job.

You know it is really funny that this video came out cause today going to work from pierce into king county I was talking with both of the bus drivers about the appreciation that people have for the drivers. And Kewan you really spoke man. You know I am a bus nut and love riding the bus. I had a talk with the bus driver in king county about this very same thing. People really don’t see what it takes to bee a bus operator. Even me a commuter. I totally understand that the job of our bus operators is not easy. I told the bus driver that the two groups of people that are under appreciated are bus operators and yes pianists. We get a lot of demand and people tell us things and sometimes we do it without the appreciation. The pianist feels the same way not to say that people don’t appreciate they do and their are a lot of those that do providing music and transportation but then you have those that don’t really care or take things for granted. It is really funny cause I think something was speaking here. Talking with the bus drivers about this and then I come home after work and see this video. Wow!!! Really this is amazing. I have a lot of respect for our bus opps cause they are moving us safely across cities and even country if you are a greyhound driver. Our bus drivers don’t get thanked enough and I told my driver the truth. It is something that I as a lot of people do on a daily basis. The bus is a part of our day. It always gets in the middle of our day to move us to where we need to go and the person that is in charge of driving this big ass thing doesn’t get appreciated. For me I get fed up with stupid people that always moan about the bus drivers and how mean and rude they are when they are not mean or nor rude. They are their getting you to where you need to go. The problem as a bus rider I see is that people hate riding buses cause they are so ungrateful and are feeling like they are entitled to giving people hell. It’s obvious that they haven’t learned how to ride even the school bus. And then people wonder why they hate riding the bus cause it is them but they make it out to bee the bus driver or operator when really it is them. I so wish that bus drivers all around the world know how much they are truly appreciated. They need to know. Even my phone carrier I actually talked with one of the reps or several of them and told them how much they are appreciated. I indicated to them that as much tech as I have in hand they are the yea and nay of having the phone on or off. They really are the ones to suspend or reinstall the phones and keep you connected. It may not bee a big thing to them but they too need to know how much they are appreciated cause at the end of the day that is their job. But the things that we do that we kind of take for granted and not telling our bus drivers even a thank you???? For me it makes me pissed when people can’t even tell their bus drivers thanks as they are boarding or getting off of the bus. They have to complain and moan and bitch about the bus and how slow it is or they don’t like riding buses cause the driver is so rude or doesn’t talk. I say to those people awwwwwweee please people!!!! Why don’t you grow up and bee a friendly human to your bus drivers not some animal. Well, just like this I know how much much you all work and I am just a commuter. Everyone and I told my bus drivers this today a lot of people drive whether they should that is for question cause maybe they shouldn’t hahahahahahaha I told them people can learn to drive yes. That is true. But,, and their is a but in this but, not everyone can actually bee a bus drivers even. It takes a certain person to do that. For the bus driver or operator it might seem second nature like me playing the keys. It is just second nature. And it is our job to do what we are called to do but yes. I was talking with the bus operators about that that too like you mentioned. Some people think that and say that it is so easy to do the job of a bus driver which is so false. That is far from the truth. Keeping people out of the harm and danger of the bus and making sure they are safe and driving the bus people don’t see really what our bus drivers have to deal with. I mean. I am frank and honest. It is pretty cool I told the bus drivers many of them I said exactly this. “It is really cool I actually get to ride on a vehicle that a lot of people hate beeing behind.” I am proud of that. A lot of times the bus drivers will laugh and some times they are proud that they are hearing this come from me. They know how proud of bus riding I am. Even my bus company here in pierce county I have called them to tell them that I am proud to bee riding buses. There is absolutely no shame in riding on a bus. I will end here. To all the bus operators out there if you are one? Please let me know in this comment section of this video cause from a commuter and passenger who just rides buses I thank you for all that you do!! School bus drivers, and transit and even greyhound. It takes a lot to drive a huge bus. I recognize this and I would love to hear from bus operators on this if you comment back. I am not like other passengers. I actually see the reality of this probably cause I have been around buses all my life and grew up with them taking me everywhere. Buses are truly amazing modes of transport cause they can help you make friends, buses can bring people together. Buses can actually assist you in learning from others. Hearing from someone else who is in their walk and travel. Buses can assist you in making and creating friendships. Buses can assist you in resting after a long day at work and they can get you prepared to get to work. A bus really is an amazing modes of transportation. They can assist you in beeing a better commuter and passenger. Buses can also assist you in conversations. They are the people movers of our cities and towns that can move a bunch of people all at once. A van or car for sure can’t do that. They can move people like a big bus can…. Buses can keep you warm in the winter traveling and cool in the summer to get you from a to b. And the buses are the safest mode of transportation in the winter when you don’t want to drive. They can keep a bunch of people safe and they do rain or shine. They will keep you safer than a car ever will. When planes are canceling flights cause of some snow storm or what ever buses will pick up that slack and get you safely to your destination.
