According to Graham Nash’s autobiography “Wild Tales”, The Hollies went to meet a so called 15 year old (though some accounts say he was 19) songwriter named Graham Gouldman.
He played them “Bus Stop”, which they were immediately excited to put their Hollies spin on.
Nash asked “Uh, before we go… got anything else?”.
Gouldman started playing “Look Through Any Window” which The Hollies also took and made a hit out of.
One more time Nash asked “anything else in your songbag for us?”
Gouldman said “ Well I do have another, but I’m afraid I promised it to my friend Peter Noone” and he launched into “No Milk Today” which Herman’s Hermits had a hit with on the UK Singles Chart.
Graham Gouldman later went on become the co-lead singer/bassist of the band 10cc
According to Graham Nash, Bus Stop was recorded in “one hour and fifty minutes flat”. Though again, there are varying accounts online of how long it took.
Personal Recording Notes:
* Graham Nash sings very high, seemingly effortlessly, ha!
* Allan Clarke sounds like he has a deep voice, but also sings quite high! Note to self: change keys to make it easier to sing!
* Tony Hicks is a master of singing harmony parts that fit perfectly, yet are extremely difficult to pick out. Not only that but his guitar solo in the middle is deceptively hard decipher, but sounds great.
* Bobby Elliott’s drum part is really energetic and fun to try to emulate here. I transcribed it note for note to try and replicate the exact feel!
