That’s so sad. I hate seeing old gear trashed due to skimpy packaging. I used to ship vintage turntables and to pack each one would take several hours, always finishing with double boxing. I’ve received old Beograms and Pioneer receivers single boxed, rattling on delivery and totally trashed. I think this seller probably thought they’d done enough, but that outer box was really flimsy, not protective at all. You have to immobilise heavy sub -components for shipping!

This is the second Bush TR I have had now that was badly packed causing damage. Have a look at my TR series livestream for the latest one. A piece of polystyrene or other packing in the battery compartment would have stopped it happening

I don't have that problem with Royal Mail. The "USUAL" online parcel shop managed to put a 25mm x 25mm hole into my scanner around the same time. I avoid using them EVERl time now although deliveries do seem to be treated better since 2022?

That's a sad sight, they're lovely when restored. It doesn't matter how much you tell some sellers to pack stuff well, it just goes in one ear & out the other. Having said that, no matter how well you pack stuff & how much you mark it fragile. Some couriers just can't be bothered to take any care. Good luck trying to get some sort of resolution.
@Radiocruncher

This has certainly not had any care taken over it by the courier. I have had radios packed a lot worse than this. The seller seems responsive so I'm sure we will work it out. Thanks for watching

What an absolute crying shame for a rare, beautiful piece of history! With the integral mounting of the chassis to the case broken away, it's nearly a total loss. I assume the case is the part that cannot be reproduced. I really feel badly for you and your client - hope you were able to sort it out somehow.

Sorry for the loss Graham; In the States we call that DOA. ( Dead On Arrival ). That looks more like 1950's vintage, Just a guess on my part. It's a learning experience for all of us not to take short cuts when shipping. Thanks for the video, Cheers !!!*****. Angelo

This is a common problem when receivers are 'posted'. Manufacturers delivered new receivers in lorries and would never have posted such delicate items. It's very much a gamble but there is no free space around the very vulnerable and delicate TR82 to absorb any shock from general handling. Great shame, it survives 60 years and then gets written off. Luckily there are many hundreds of this model still around.
@Radiocruncher

Yes this radio isn’t the best candidate for posting and is no match for the modern courier. It could have been packaged a lot better which would have given it half a chance. Such a shame that it got damaged

@Radiocruncher

Hi Chris. The chassis is built like a tank. The issue is that it’s bolted through some metal clips to the plastic case. Any shock and the plastic snaps off and the chassis drops into the case. The chassis is bolted to the rear panel so that gets broken in the process. Thanks for watching

Great shame Graham. I suspect the fact that the 60 year old plastic has gone brittle is a major factor. To lessen the risk, padding within the case to fill the spaces would be a great help, as you mentioned in the video. Looking forward to the next one ......... PS. I notice you are getting closer to the magic 1000. :)
@Radiocruncher

Hi John. Yes the plastic does get brittle. When I purchased it I added a note to pack it really well as the plastics are fragile. Looks like the seller wants it back so I’ll have to look out for another one. Getting close now to the 1000. Thanks for watching

How awful Graham :( looks like a cracking example of an 82C as well. I love the way that Bush hung on to the metal chassis style construction, long after most had gone over to pcb's. Anyhow let us know what you agree with the seller- if it's going to cost you to return it, it may be best getting as much of a refund as you can and hanging on to it as a parts donor as you say.

Sometimes I wish sellers would not sell gear if they can't be bothered to pack it. Reminds me of my HP lcr meter wrapped in a layer of bubble wrap and a bin liner. How stupid people are. And it was so nice before it was posted. Can't really blame the postal service for that one.
@Radiocruncher

I agree Simon. The problem is unless they are experienced in selling vintage equipment it might be the 1st one they have sent and don’t realise how fragile they are.
@kennynvake4hve584

I do not think it was all a bad package job...here in the states...I have seen this before..and it comes from the postal company, throwing the radio or package, yes throwing...and when it hits, or stops, because of the weight of this radio, the momentum breaks everything that the chassis is connected to...It is not funny at all when I say this "The term drop shipping comes to mind".
@Radiocruncher
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenny. It certainly wasn’t the worst packaging job I have seen. The box just wasn’t up to the job. When I ship these I pack polystyrene into the void below the chassis where the batteries sit. This avoids the chassis moving then. The seller has the radio back now so hopefully he can use it for spares

It only take a careless courier to sling it in the back of the van and those plastic lugs will break if it’s not packed perfectly. They almost need some sort of transit bracket or support in the battery compartment

I have a .PDF resident on my desktop, which contains "ship to my shop" packaging instructions. It includes directions for "caging" transformers, speakers, and other "heavier than most other components in the unit needing repair appear(s) to be". Anything weighing more than 12 Lbs must be crated, and shipped via UPS, or Greyhound Package Express, and comply with the "caging" requirement. I do not accept items for repair, or items (other than components or tools) shipped via other methods. I don't really know about U.K "equivalents". While an engineer for Boeing, when applicable, I shipped via Red Star, when dealing with Smiths. (it saved me from "visiting" Basingstoke a few times)
