Need to get yourself a Scotch Eye Wood Auger. You just make a hole and pound a peg in for joining things very secure, and if you want it more secure just split the peg and hammer in a small wedge when you're done, then use your hand saw to cut off the excess. another great thing about them is they don't take up much space, and the handle can be a nice carved piece or just a stick you find.

Some fantastic designs and ideas! I've seen the suspended fire before and at first didn't understand. But it was then explained that it could be raised or lowered. Raised to cook at a convenient height without having to lean or reach over it as well as to raise the smoke level until it was going well enough to burn relatively smokeless, and then lowered to dry & heat the enclosure. I think the other advantage would be in the summer, when you want a fire for cooking, but not for warmth. This seems like the camp is also a work (labor of love) in progress, so I've subbed to be able to learn more and watch it grow.

@Wayne Morphett I agree, but there really is no difference between swamp water and the moist cold ground covered in snow both are detrimental to the life of a fire . its an excellent choice of fire lay for the climate and the environment he's in, but you are right were as the amount of wood it takes to sustain it, however there doesn't seem to be a shortage of hard woods where he at.

Well, two suggestions if you ever decide to make something like that: 1) Don't use paracord (like he did) because it melts easily and burns hot, which means it's liable to drop a pile of flaming logs on you, and would functionally be a wick leading up into the rafters of your wooden structure so if it lit on fire and you were focusing for too long on the fire that just got dropped on your feet it could light the whole thing on fire with you in it. 2) Make it out of something a little sturdier with higher walls and the ability to control air intake if at all possible (like a barbeque pit that had its legs broken) that way if the fire gets too big (say you're cooking bacon on it or something and the grease causes a flare-up) you can shut it down before it burns your shelter down.
@PsylomeAlpha
3 жыл бұрын
@@ludilight2948 Yeah, it's not the best for heating a building, especially one with a high ceiling and such open walls. It IS however very good for cooking on, so it's not an idea without merit. Personally I would've built a brazier instead (not like, the women's underwear, but the big wok or kettle with legs for building a fire in) instead, so that it could be moved more easily.

this reminds me of the experimental forts I used to make all over my city woods, back in the 70's when i was playing hooky from elementary school. lol had lots of pissed off city officials, as most them got discovered by high schoolers later, and used as party zones. Were they practical? hell no, but fun to build. Thankful to have spent some real time in the woods, now,, do not need to use so much vital habitat to build structure that is practical, and easily returned to the environment after I finish, so it can be used later if needed or re-establish healthy habitat. Something I learned from the idiots who took over my kiddy forts, is best to leave no trace... Make everything look as if I was never even there.
