CHACONNE from DARDANUS - Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)
This performance was filmed at a concert given by the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble, directed by Rosemary Nalden, in 2016 at the Linder Auditorium, Johannesburg.
Rameau’s five act opera Dardanus was performed for the first time in 1739 and subsequently received a further 25 performances. Responding to its many critics who found the plot, with all its supernatural references, laughable, Rameau revised Dardanus considerably in 1744, adding even more music, and prompting a contemporary to comment that Dardanus was “so laden with music that for three whole hours the orchestral players do not even have time to sneeze.” This magnificent Chaconne serves as the opera’s grand finale.
The Buskaid Music School is situated in Diepkloof Soweto, and offers high quality string tuition to the local, less privileged community. In 2022 Buskaid celebrated its 25th Anniversary.
