That may have been a decibel-meter app on his phone; Japan is an advanced society and there are sometimes noise ordinances at certain hours. Markus handled it cool and polite, though - and Bravo for that, too. As for the song, well, check out the couple boogieing at about 2:18 or so...and that young boy(about 1:10...) loved it right away.

I did, with my trio, a long time ago. The ‘stage’ wasn’t even big enough for the drums and we kept triggering the maximum sound level and getting cut off! 😂

Busking is illegal in Japan, though the police won't normally bother you unless it is generating a static crowd (which disrupts pedestrian traffic flow), is in itself generating income (which can constitute an evasion of tax), or someone complains (which can always happen). As with any other instance, they will be polite, but will expect compliance. Not complying with police is in itself a crime in Japan.

Did they stop and check for a permit? I'm considering busking in Osaka but I heard you need a permit. Also, I heard most people don't make many tips from busking as well. Is that what you experienced in Japan?

The police don't like music but at least you haven't suffered like the Vancouver busker 'shatnershairpiece' and youtube 'LUNATIC destroys my pedalboard, depriving me of food!' He has compilations of the threats and attacks he endures. People just don't know how many idiots are out there walking the streets, a buskers life is not easy.

Yes, don’t do it if you want to make money busking. The way to make it work in Japan is to organise a tour of ‘Live Houses’. There are many all around.
