Liszt produced many piano transcriptions of Beethoven works, amongst them most notably the Nine Symphonies. But on a smaller scale here is Beethoven's song 'Adelaide' Op.46 which Liszt transforms into a lush arrangement for the piano.
Busoni seems to have been attracted to this work, as he also made a piano roll of the same for the Welte company around the same time. This roll recording not only displays Busoni's fabulous technical abilities, but also demonstrates the way he shapes the contrasting sections of the whole piece into a poetic whole.
There is a later recording of Adelaide by Busoni's pupil Petri which perhaps not surprisingly, sounds remarkably similar to this roll.
