1. 15 But Jeshurun waxed fat and kicked;
You fattened up, grew sleek and thick!
He turned from his creator God,
And scorned to prize his saving Rock.
16 They made Him jealous with strange gods;
They piqued His rage with filthy frauds.
17 To demon gods they sacrificed-
To upstart idols they devised.
2. 18 The Rock who formed you, you ignore,
Forgetting God who brought you forth.
19 When Yahweh saw their breach of trust,
He turned away in His disgust.
His sons and daughters piqued His rage.
20 He said, “I will conceal My face.
I’ll see their hist’ry to its end,
These sons on whom I can’t depend.
3. 21 “They made Me jealous with non-gods,
Enraged Me with their idol frauds.
I’ll make them jealous with nonsons;
Enrage them, choosing foolish ones.
22 My rage sets fire they cannot quell
And it shall burn to lowest hell;
Devouring earth and all her fruit,
It kindles fire in mountain roots.
4. 23 “I’ll spend My arrows, heaping woes,
24 Until, devoured by burning coals,
They waste away from hunger pangs;
I’ll send against them beastly fangs,
And fiery serpents of the dust.
25 Inside and out the sword will thrust
To terrorize young man and maid,
The nursing child, and man of gray.”
5. 26 “I would have said, “I’ll shatter them
And blot all trace of them from men,”
27 But I was loath to rile their foes,
Who might misunderstand their woes.
‘Our mighty hand did this,’ they’d say,
‘And not the LORD in any way!’
28 These heathen wander, lacking wits,
Nor is there wisdom in their midst.”
6. 29 If only they would comprehend,
That they would see their latter end!
30 How could one win against our might,
And put ten thou sand troops to flight,
Unless our Rock had sold us out-
The LORD surrendered us to rout?
31 Their rock is not a Rock indeed,
Our enemies themselves concede.
7. 32 “Their vines are vines of Sodomites,
Their grapes of gall are bitter bites.
33 The wine they’ve stored is serpent bile,
As cruel as cobra venom, vile.
34 Is not My vengeance stored away?
35 Their foot shall slip that destined day.
Because revenge is Mine alone,
Their time of ruin hastens on.
8. 36 The LORD will judge His people frail
With pity, when their power fails,
And they are gone, both free and slave.
37 He’ll say, “Where are their gods to save?
Where is the rock of help they had?
38 Who ate their sacrificial fat?
The wine that filled their sacred cup?
Let them assist! Let them rise up!
9. 39 “Now see that I, yes, I am He!
There is no God apart from Me.
I kill, enliven, crush and mend.
No one can rescue from My hand.
40 I vowed by My own life, I swore,
41 When I have grasped My gleaming sword,
I’ll render vengeance on My foes,
Repaying ev’ry man I loathe.
10. 42 “I’ll make My arrows drunk with death,
My sword shall leap to gorge on flesh,
With blood from captives and the dead
And from their war-torn battle heads.”
43 O Gentiles, with His tribes, be glad!
He will avenge His servants’ blood.
He’ll render vengeance on His foe;
But make atonement for His own.
