Curated by Talei Draunibaka and team, for The Asia Foundation USAID funded Pacific RISE-CTIP program. The Butakoci (Stolen) production features songs and dances about historical and contemporary Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in Fiji.
The Butakoci production aims to raise awareness and initiate dialogue and action on addressing TIP through a theatrical experience. The production weaves compelling narratives, choreography, and music to portray the effects of TIP on communities. Butakoci is directed by local artist Talei Draunibaka, who wrote the songs and the script and sang alongside other artists and dancers in the production. With the Fiji government and USAID, in partnership with The Asia Foundation, supports the Butakoci production through the Pacific Regional Initiative and Support for More Effective Counter Trafficking in Persons (Pacific RISE CTIP) program. The production is an innovative approach to raising awareness of TIP, considered a taboo subject, given links to gender-based violence.
Butakoci will highlight the trafficking issue with the objective of starting conversations about a crime that affects communities across Fiji and the region.
