Butuan Coastal Road Project: Road to the future
The Department of Public Works and Highways - Caraga Region (DPWH-13) for the past three (3) years had received bigger funds to address the region’s infrastructure development to further boosts its economy. In this Golden Age of Infrastructure, the DPWH-13 is in a massive implementation of projects to spur national economic development.
One such big ticket project is the Butuan City-Agusan del Norte Coastal Road project which is under the Caraga Priority Road Infrastructure (CPRIP) in support of the Region’s economic development plan envisages to develop new priority infrastructure projects that will spur city, provincial and regional economic activities.
The coastal road project is seen to complement the road development plan of the city by opening up the coastal areas for urban renewal as well as for socio-economic activities such as for agricultural, fishery, tourism and industrial development. With the needed infrastructure in place, the envisioned Butuan economic zone will secure future commercial and industrial engagements and employment.
“This particular project will also hope to realize the construction of another bridge that will cross the mighty Agusan River, this time downstream, dubbed Magsaysay Bridge III; and this is programmed for CY 2019,” DPWH-13 Regional Director Pol M. Delos Santos announced.
It is also seen to address the present increasing traffic congestion of the Butuan City proper along the Daang Maharlika and Butuan City-Cagayan de Oro City-Iligan Road (BCIR) as it will function as a bypass/diversion or alternate road that connects Daang Maharlika to Masao Port Road and Nasipit Port without passing through the main city road.
With Butuan City fast becoming a metro city like, Manila, Davao, or Cebu problems like traffic which was never experienced before in any part of the city, is now beginning to irate commuters. Moreover, the long que of immobile vehicles even for some few minutes hampers the movement of economic activity which results in millions of loses in investments.
The Butuan City-Agusan del Norte Coastal Road project is divided into two (2) sections:
1. NRJ Daang Maharlika-Taguibo-Masao Port Road, which has a road length of 13.40 km and includes the construction of 3 bridges - Banza Bridge, Lumbocan Bridge and the proposed Magsaysay Bridge III. It will traverse Barangays Taguibo, Cabcabon, Bobon and Banza before it crosses the Agusan River thru Maug Bridge connecting Barangays Banza and Maug. After reaching Barangay Maug, this road project will then continue to Barangay Pagatpatan crossing Pagatpatan River and then finally junctions Butuan City-Masao Port in Barangay Lumbocan
2. Nasipit- Buenavista-Masao Port Road, which involves the construction of 31.30 km road and 4 bridges - San Roque Bridge, Sacol Bridge, Tinago Bridge and the proposed Abilan Bridge; which will start at Barangay Talisay, Nasipit as it junctions at Nasipit Port Road. It will traverse Barangays, Talisay, Punta, San Roque, Ata-atahon, Kinabjangan and Cubi-Cubi of Nasipit before it traverses Barangay Sacol, Tinago, Manapa, and Abilan of Buenavista then continues to Butuan City through Barangays Pinamangculan, Masao and Lumbocan as it junctions Butuan City-Masao Port Road.
Total programmed cost of the project amounts to Php 3,304,320,000
The project has started in 2015 with the release of P50 million and a total of P1,226,223,000 was already released from 2015 to 2017 leaving a balance of P2,078,097,000
Another release of P 200 Million for 2018 was received by DPWH RXIII for the continuation of the project specifically for road concreting and bridge construction.
To date, the project is still on-going construction for the targeted 5.341 km road concreting including the construction of two bridges - Sacol Bridge and Banza Bridge under its CY 2016 and 2017 release and has completed a total of 10.510 km of concrete road and 4.579 km of gravel road from the release in 2015 and part of 2016.
The completion of Butuan City-Agusan del Norte Coastal Road project is a vital key to the prosperous future of Butuan and Agusan and the entire Caraga Region.
“It is seen not just in Butuan City. Development is spewing and infrastructure is the key”, concludes RD Pol M. Delos Santos. / DPWH Caraga.
