To the people complaining about prices: I understand that many can’t afford these things, but there is a reason why quality items are so expensive. Because it is expensive to MAKE them. As a society we have grown accustomed to spending as little as possible and are offended when a brand asks more than we deem to be “fair” (as evidenced in this comment section). Quality materials are much rarer than cheap materials, due to demand, and there very few fair trade factories operating. Let’s not even get into the time and cost of producing a handmade product. You can not compare prices of a $5 wash bag from Forever 21 (which are almost always made with petroleum derived materials and assembled with child or unethical labour) with an ethically produced product. The more we purchase these sustainable, made to last items, the lower the cost will be to produce them. Finally, as Kate mentioned, these items are meant to be purchased ONCE. It is far cheaper in the long run to purchase something one time than a new damn toaster every 3 or 4 years.

@@SeiraVonKarma You pay for zero waste trend? I yes, I guess, sometimes but not always. As in this cases, everything what is on "buy me once" worth the price and you pay for quality and for fair salaries for the people who created this items, not for the trend.

I HATE the money talk at the moment. People want to have it all without paying anything. It’s this society’s disease. I’m a goldsmith and I have to explain, almost justify, my prices to my customers on a daily basis. Craftsmanship isn’t cheap like a brass earring from Primark! If you want something carefully crafted, you have to invest. It has always been that way, but our “throw away society” has forgotten that.

yea my grandma told me about how she saved up for months to bu a winter coat. but after buying that coat she didn't need to buy a new one for years. if it got a bit damaged she'd take it to the tailors and they would make it as new. they don't make things that way anymore because it isn't as profitable.

Yes!! We love our dualit toaster which was a gift and repaired it a couple of years ago with ease. I have some Wolford tights that are over 10years old! They are expensive and I don't believe ethically made but for tights that don't ladder and last so long - totally worth it - great to see there might be a more eco friendly option!

You should look at the Guppy Friend wash bag . It’s designed to catch the plastic microfibres that come off our synthetic clothes and stop then entering the water ways. You can buy it online . They’re are around £20 but they look big . I’m planing to get one myself.

The best reason for not having made to order is quick delivery and the opportunity for those who cannot afford sustainable brands at full price get to buy some in the sales, when they sell old stock. I buy T-shirts from People Tree sales, I buy Nudie jeans in the sale and I buy Reformation dresses in the sale.

So, I work in a restaurant/bar. Near the end of a busy Friday/Saturday night even though we've cleaned up there are often people still outside drinking. Or we need to get all the glasses in to clean. So, basically, we give people plastic cups to put their drinks in so 1. They don't steal our glasses 2. We can clean all the glasses 3. We can finally go home at 3 in the morning and 4. the council don't nag at us about any broken glass they can trace back to us. It's certainly not the only instance of waste at the place but it's a conundrum. Lots of people love drinking and partying-that's just the reality- but what solutions could there be which allow people to finish their drinks but that lets us go home, prevents waste and stops us losing glasses

I agree with the principle Kate, but these pricese are plainly absurd. Zero waste should be way more accessible and affordable for it to spread. It makes me furious to be honest, how can people be encouraged to produce less waste if they havo to spend two, three, four times as much for basically anything? Lucky you if can afford to spend SEVEN HUNDRED POUNDS on a piece of luggage o 250 for a piece of clothing, but many can't, and a lot of things can last a long time with proper care and can be repaired.

You can be eco without buying into the yuppie lifestyle. These brands play into the keep up with the Joneses people. I've had a 40 dollar 4 slice Cuisinart toaster still going strong after 15 years, and no repairs. 30 dollar Levis - 250 for Jeans? Then you have more money than brains.

Marketer here - please be a bit more discerning, people. This website is 100% targeted towards people like my parents who are willing, if not attracted to, high prices because of the perception that $$$ = quality, but instead of being sold shitty, luxury brand items, you (hopefully) receive quality, durable items instead. Which, having bought a lot of cheap items to save money only to buy the more expensive, durable option later, I don't necessarily have a problem with. Likewise, it doesn't negate accessibility issues within sustainability communities. Indeed, that's WHY secondhand options are so popular. However, sustainability does, arguably, need to be sold to people, and there will be different target markets for that. This one happens to be targeting people with a lot of disposable income.

Feedback in case it's useful : By Me Once seems a great idea and I visited their site, so your video worked, but I was unimpressed by the site. It feels more like a selection of premium products than a genuine attempt to find the most long-lasting of everything. The impression is of a company that's done deals with particular manufacturers rather than researched and presented products in an unbiased way.

No no no to the alpaca wool. As soon as it gets to animal products, you throw all zero waste attempts off the board. Please consider that animals products are the leading cause for polution like eg plastic that comes from the fishing gear. Apart from that, I adore the idea of the website.
