What I’ve found as I wrecked my bike last summer is that it takes me a few months for a new bike to become almost an extension of my body. My old bike was like another limb I just attached and could smash the trails. I’ve had 2 new bikes since and it’s taken a while to get that same feel

I got gifted a 2012 hardtail in 2019. Since then I upgraded: Tires, drivetrain, fork, light, bell, dropper post, spacers, grips and pedals because all of these things broke or lacked. So by now it's only the frame, bar, seat and wheels that are original. Upgrades cost me around 500 Euro. Still I ride it almost every day for commutes and in the mountains.

Hi Neil, Doddy .. I'm siding with Doddy for maintaining and upgrading .. my bike is quite old .. but it came from the distribution center .. (a new frame "element 30 - Rocky Mountain, from years ago) as a replacement of my Haro double suspension's swing arm bushing weakness that my local dealer couldn't fix, including a fox shock float .. so i was pretty happy with it .. tried it for a season, than decided to upgrade instead of buying a new one. Double suspensions are so expensive now .. it was cheaper to change the part that were ready to change .. instead of getting a new one. Last year i invested around 700-800$ for my upgrades (cassette, free wheel hub, XT derailleur, chain, hydraulic brakes front and back, ice tech disk for front 203mm, lock on grips, saddle and lights and brand new tires including tubeless kits) All installed myself except for the free wheel hub .. i leave this to pro's to install and align .. Very happy for my move, love the new look .. and all set for couple more years. Keep the good work, Cheers !!!

i bought a 29er hardtail and really want to take it to italy or france to ride enduro. ill probably get a fresh drivetrain and front suspension setup with a dropper post. the frame is great and the bike fits me really well. theres no need to get a brand new bike just to go riding some place special. i barely even scratched the surface of what i can do with this bike.

I have experienced the best of both worlds, I own two cheapish xc hartails that I have upgraded to the point that they feel like new or completely different bikes. I also bought a new ebike in september that is a completely different beast but I find myself uprgading it as well. The difference being that the new bike need fewer and cheaper upgrades than the old bike and they make a huge different in the way you ride them and feel when you do so. of course, if you own an 8 year old or above bike, I recommend bying a new one, but if it is a couple of years old, you should really get to use that money and enjoy it a bit more. depends on what you want and how badly you want it. idealy you can work harder or more hours to earn more money and slowly upgrade and buy new bikes. great informative video. loved it:)

There's a reason you have Top Mods in the tech show and not "Look at my brand new bike" section. Although, you could say the Bike Vault is what that is. I think by taking a bike and changing it to meet your needs, you put a little of yourself into the bike and give it a lot more soul.

Great vid and a very important topic for many. One thing that I think you should have mentioned that maybe you can do in another video is physical/health condition or especially for younger riders that out grow their current bike. IE: I had heart surgery a few years ago and it's been a real struggle to get back to where I was on a regular bike so I'm looking at getting an EMTB to help make the rides more fun for me and my son (so he doesn't have to wait on me on the ups...lol) but also my son has outgrown his old bike and we need to get him a new one for the kind of riding/racing that he wants to do. There's lots of factors to this subject but sometimes there's no choice about getting a new/newer bike to fit your needs.

I'd love people to chime in here because the used bike market just doesn't seem to make sense to me: Do any bike manufacturers allow the frame warranty to be transferred? (Its my understanding "no"). So how do used bikes still sell for so much? I see people selling used carbon frames for similar money to new ones, with no warranty, you'd have to save a lot of money to justify a used frame purchase correct? A simple example here in the US I see Santa Cruz and other similar brand frames for $1,500-$2,000 new (on sale), if I'm not going to get a warranty, then I'd expect to see used Santa Cruz frames for around $1,000....but they're not. What am I missing?
@gaveltron

Manufactures warranty only applied to original purchaser as far as i know. As for the used frames, are they actually selling for that much are is that just what they are asking? Big difference between the two.
@gcavy1
5 жыл бұрын
thats a good question on if they're actually selling or not. Its just a little frustrating because it doesn't seem like you can get a good value out of a used bike when purchasing...and unless you sell regularly when you bike is a year or two old, they don't hold a lot sellable value after that. IO ride my bikes for almost a decade, so I have nothing left to show for it when I'm done!

I rebuilt my hardtail last year, cost about $1500 (Cdn) for a better shock and groupset. The frame was in good shape and the geometry suited my riding. You might argue that I could have purchased a new bike for a bit more. True, but a bike in that price range would have included a less expensive groupset/shock than the ones I had purchased and one that included the same groupset/shock, would be about twice as expensive. And in a couple of years when I do buy a new bike, the old bike will get me more money because of these upgrades. So, for me, just made sense.

I'm with Doddy on this one. I love my Trek 820 and it is over 5 years old. I bought it used from a pawn shop for 75$. The tires and wheels alone are worth 100$ ( hutchinson toros ) and after investing 150 in a new front shock, as well as a seatpost shock, it is perfect. Downhill is really fun, street is easy enough, and it still looks great. I prefer rim brakes over disc but to each their own. The advantage of disk brakes is minimal but, the added issues are not. Let's be honest, unless you are a pro racer or downhill/enduro racer then yeah you will benefit from a slightly faster time but the average guy doesn't need all that extra overpriced shit. Waste of money.

instead of trying to go as fast as you can and pushing your boundaries, try to pace yourself, especially at the beginning so you don´t get too tired and blow it half race. instead of trying to go super fast on the downhills (where you can potentially crash and hurt yourself and your bike pretty badly) focus on going fast uphill and training endurance/strength and balance. So go at a pace you are comfortable with (what you have trained for) and then you can pedal really hard in the last 500 meters of the race. in other words, if you do 100% all the race, you might get in 3rd place but the chances of crashing/ injury and fatigue are wayy too high so not really worth it. If you do a 60% at the beginning, 80% in the middle and 95% at the end, you might get 10th place(these are just examples) which will give you an idea of your level, your riding will be safer and more precise hence less probability of injury/crash and it is almost an ideal pace for a race so you can fine tune your fatigue levels and overall speed. Then you could just play it safe and use 50% of your strength throughout the whole race, which will get you nowhere near the top, but you get a good idea of the course, the racing atmosphere, you can take mental notes, think and choose your lines better, ride smoothly and swiftly. but most importantly, you will be very safe and even though you half-assed the race, i can almost guarantee you will not end last because some riders crashed really bad or crashed several times, some riders can´t even finish the race so sometimes it is better to learn and live to win another day than to push it and end up in a hospital with a broken bike and the moral on the ground. being your first race I strongly recommend the third option followed by the second. focus on not crashing and the uphills and you should be fine, you can worry about winning 15 races from now, there is time. Have a nice race and good luck!

No love for the "buy new-to-you" option? Buying someone else's previously loved bike is a great way to upgrade out of your current bike while not having to spend full MSRP on a brand new bike. Bikes seem to depreciate even faster than cars do, and you can find some really good deals out there on a bike that's only a model year or three old if you look.

Let me share my opinion - it depends. Go for upgrade if: …you have patience and you have a story with that bike and you really like it …you want to learn and enjoy DIY …you have fun in digging youtube videos and learn “How To” …if you want cheap stuff from ebay or aliexpress and it is ok for you… trust me don’t count with this if you go to competition. But going for work is quite ok. … first thing to upgrade: Bottom Bracket and have 1(front)x10(rear) gear set. … hydraulic brakes Go for new one if: ...you want to save money and have something much better with new tech. ...you get a new bike ... yes :) ...you don't want to learn and DIY about bikes. ...you compete

Kona big honzo, if you do get the base spec model, make sure you keep some money aside for new grips (cheap lock ons will do the trick) and brakes because the stock ones are garbage but everything else on it is great (if you can afford it, get the nicer one). The geometry is sweet which is why I recommend it and also the frame is very robust and comes with a lifetime warranty on the frame for the original owner. I have one and it goes hard, I primarily ride enduro and downhill specific tracks (High speed really rough DH race tracks definitely push it's limits when I don't hold back) but technical enduro and flow tracks are the sweet spot. As well as it's great downhill capabilities, it's climbing abilities are very good (hardtail/steep seat angle make it a great climber) and is a comfortable bike to spend hours in the saddle. Overall it's a great all rounder from cross country to enduro and I'd recommend it over the similar hardtails made by trek and specialized simply because of kona's better thought out geometry making it better at everything

I'm more like Doddy. I have a Giant hardtail Talon and a fullsus Giant Reign. They are both well kept and maintained by me. Except for the suspension. I let my local bike shop maintain them. I only started mountain biking 3 years ago and those are the bikes I still have. One thing I noticed, during the course of my progression. Upgrade doesn't mean a new bike, as my skill developed. I started to get the "feel" on the handling of my bike. When I feel something lacking or a component or parts that's underperforming. That's when I start to upgrade. For example on my Giant Reign. As I get faster, my XT breaks doesn't feel its enough to stop me on a fast descent. So I upgraded that to XT Quad Pistons. Then I started jumping. My foot keep coming off from my FUNN BIGFOOT pedal. So I upgraded to a Crank Brothers STAMP 7. My point is, its better to upgrade when your skill demands for it or its doesn't feel that fun when you first ride on a mountain bike.

I'm in a confusing situation where I ofc cant choose between a new bike or upgrading my current one BUT, my current bike is a second hand Cannondale trail 7 which is pretty dirty with rusted shocks ive had this bike for more than a month so i dont know if I should spend a bunch of money on upgrading it or just trade it in for a new bike which would cost about the same as upgrading it i suppose since I need new pedals, shocks, brakes etc. so its either that or I could get a nice budget bike from my local bike shop with newer parts, hydraulic brakes and all that stuff. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone helped me choose.

I'm not a young man and sometimes the rough terrain feels like its going to shake my false teeth out 😁 I am thinking of buying a suspension seat post - Suntour SP12 - NCX - this one actually. As I dont want to (cant really afford) a full suspension bike I was just wondering if anyone knows if this would be a good upgrade or just a waste of money..? Love the channel keep up the good work lads.

I have a 2013 Giant XTC and already put a ton of cash in it to get it to where I want for performance and fit. I can't bring myself to sell it lol, the only original part on my bike is the frame, everything else has performance upgrades. My son keeps telling me I "need" a new bike, but I strongly disagree. I still have an old 3x10 drivetrain made up of Shimano xtr and xt components and shifts like a dream, and 3x10 is much better for cadence matching than any of the newer systems. Funny how he always asks to ride my bike over his newer style one hmmm lol.

Basically I break a bike down to a five year lifespan. And trail bikes become very old fast with “trends”. What I do is take the price of a bike divided by five for five years and that’s the depreciation point. Pretty much matches up with Kelly’s bluebook on bicycles. Usually you get to that two year point where you can get 5O-60% Of the bikes value of well taken care of. And that makes it great down payment for a new bike especially when Trek credit card that you have zero interest for one year.

I love my aluminum 2006 Cannondale Rush and I slowly update the items I need. I refuse to spend the price they want for the new bikes. They are rediculous. The whole bike industry is out of control.

My problem is that I am way too skilled and aggressive for my bike. I still have an entry level hardtail, and it works fine, but I often go waaay slower than I'd be comftarble because I'm afraid to destroy the bike. In my case I should definetly buy a new one, but while I save some money do you have any suggestions on how to get the most out of it?

#ASKGMBN Hey guys, I have a 2016 Merida Big Nine 900, do you think it's worth my money to upgrade a bike that is so old (especially as I am trying to ride more and take on new challenges) or is it better for me to invest in something newer and more modern. Cheers

Hi I've just bought a kona coiler, about 11 years old I believe. Just bought as a starter bike for now but needs some tlc. Is it worth bringing it back to life and upgrading with some modern parts? Or just save up for a spanking new one?

It's cool to buy a brand new bike, when you can afford what you want, BUT - upgrading your existing bike it's like maintaining your relationship with a good old friend

I have a short travel 29er but I find my self wanting more travel so should I buy a trail/enduro bike or should I make my bike a 29/27.5 mullet and add a longer travel fork?

I have a Gary Fisher Joshua F4(20 year old bike) that I recently bought from a friend. He upgraded the front suspension and I'm going to replace the drive train this coming Spring. Can I get some thoughts and feedback please?

Wow! Neil can now put weight on his injured leg? And wear jeans? It took me some time to wear jeans after my road accident...
