What got me to finally buy Marvel Champions, was Nerdz Day lol. So I started with the Next Evolution Expansion and Deadpool hero pack, when I don't even own the core game yet. So I bought the core game off Amazon while on sale. I'm trying to mostly follow sales, because I already dove into the beginner progression of Arkahm Horror the LCG this year. Why are Captain America and Dr. Strange packs the only ones out of print for us newbies jumping into this now? I do prefer X-men to Avengers, thanks to the 90s cartoon nostalgia. So I may deviate from the beginner deck building to get my favotite X-men hero packs. In fact, I already bought several more X-men hero packs. Gambit and Jubilee are my favorite from the 90s, but instead of buying both as they are the same class, I went with Gambit, Cyclops & Phoenix up front.

Great video! IMHO, if you are a brand-spankin' new player, I recommend staying far away from all the X-men stuff, haha. It really is a big jump in complexity across the board. I mainly think about two things: deckbuilding and what you want to play against (scenarios and modulars). In terms of starting out for heroes and deck-building, I very strongly recommend sticking with the Avengers theme. Ms. Marvel, Thor, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Black Widow, and even Hulk... I feel like these all come with essential aspect cards for deck building. Throw in Wasp, Ant-man, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and I think that really is the core of the game. From there, I think you can go wherever! For scenarios, I think Green Gobbles and Kang are fantastic early on and both give a ton of flavor with the extra modulars. Rise of Red Skull is a great pick as said in the video in terms of value and complexity. The villains are great, Spider-woman is rad, and the even if Hawkeye isn't the best-- the pre-con has some essential Avengers Leadership allies! I also think The Hood is a great pick if you find that you want some higher difficulty. It's a unique scenario and great in terms of value as it comes with Standard II which will add more difficulty to any scenario and comes with a ton of modulars of varying difficulty that can change up any of your other scenarios. Sinister motives is definitely a great box to get early on, I just wouldn't recommend getting it first. It is definitely a jump in complexity and I think to some extent, you'd want to go all in on the other web-warrior heroes to really get the most out of it. But it's fun either way! *Edited for my bad spelling.

I think you've biased the hero strength of Rocket and Groot against the impossible villains in GMW. If they came in the Red Skull pack, they'd be fine. I build out my whole box for game night, so the decks are all made very economically, and yet these two are very popular. I don't see them as "weaker heroes" at all. As for GMW replayability, I mean it's not a fun game-night sort of box. It's a serious campaign box, where you tailor the decks specifically for each villain. Wiping all our carefully built decks, just to try to make four epic decks is the most unfun thing we can imagine. GMW got played almost entirely with the "official house-rules," and even then, we got stomped so bad, it's just not fun. House-rules aren't good enough, GMW needs to be completely re-engineered. My friends almost gave up on Marvel Champions because of this box. Replayability factor NEGATIVE FIVE STARS --it seriously has the potential to end all interest in the game.

@@josephgerman2674 I actually quit playing for 3 months when I first got this box. I see what you’re saying about rocket and groot. I don’t think they are horrible. But with just the core box and guardians most wanted their deck building options and power are very limited. Rocket gets a lot better when he has access to genius. And I do think rocket and groot are weaker than most of the other heroes that come in boxes. Spider woman and Hawkeye as a duo I think is stronger. Spectrum and warlock is debatable but I think stronger. Miles and Gwen are for sure stronger. Shadow cat and colossus are stronger. And domino and cable are a lot stronger. And bishop and magik are a lot stronger. So I rated them low based on that criteria due to limited deck building options and being weaker than the average campaign box heroes. @@DaringLime Genius? Did you mean Ingenuity from Ironheart's deck or are you talking about the genius trait? We don't have Ingenuity, but Rocket does great. Most of the group like him better than Thor for minion slaying. It's so fun to plink away at minions, knowing that Rocket is ready to sweep them up and draw more cards. Back to the economy vs ultimate deck, I was looking at Rocket --not sure why Ingenuity would be a game-changer for him (except that it's an extra resource generator). And there aren't a lot of cards which require genius trait. Moon Girl? We're playing economy decks on all heroes, and Rocket is A-tier. He gets the job done. I think Adam Warlock is somewhat like Iron-Man in that how you pilot the deck really matters. That being said, the kind of Aspect strategies he can use are very limited and there are some cards you won’t want to play without: Summoning Spell, Sorcerer Supreme, Spiritual Meditation etc…While “Wild Tutor” is widely regarded as his “solved deck”, I actually think Summoning Spell Recursion is stronger. Being able to dump multiple high cost allies on the board in a single turn and then being able to keep Allies like Giant Man and She-Hulk at 4-6 attack by healing them tends to out-value every other strategy in the game.

@@jongahimer5338 Great thoughts! I tried Adam again. I added Make the Call, Spiritual Meditation, and Sorcerer Supreme. I build out my whole box for game night, so that means Dr Strange doesn't have SS. It also means I can't just run unlimited with Adam's deck, rather all my decks are "budget decks." Whenever someone has a good Adam Warlock deck, it just means they have a larger card pool, probably play solo, and build "perfect decks" for each scenario. That said, Adam did better with SS. I wish I could add more SMs. I don't use them with Scarlet Witch, because I don't play solo (I don't need to Hex Bolt every hand). I don't have access to those allies, but I could try to swap a few of Adam's nice 2-cost allies for some better "Voltron" candidates. With my budget deck, I mostly just defend and avoid discarding until Adam is built up, then I let the cards fly. With Battlemage, he's more versatile, but he's slower to build than Iron Man.

I started from the very beginning with Marvel Champions, it’s such a great game, and this is not a bad video btw though I think there’s a few more things I would consider when getting into the game like I would say some hero pack’s heroes should be avoided until you have a wider card pool cause heroes like Hulk felt disappointing out of the box. Later expansions (like X-Men) also added more complexity so jumping straight into those might be less ideal. Personally would recommend going the “MCU” route but just get Captain America, Doctor Strange, and Rise of the Red Skull to start out then Mad Titans Shadow with Scarlet Witch down the line. Hard disagree on SM campaign. The expert campaign is horribly balanced with Public Outcry, the villains have tedious mechanics such as self mill and loading your deck with their cards, the Surge Keyword is overused, and the reward system is the worst of any Campaign. Having the villains scale with you in a campaign already vying for “most difficult” is ridiculous. And some of the upgrades are just plain bad. Gaining 1 Thw but then not being able to choose what to Thw is crazy.

I can see where you are coming from. I didn't have that experience exactly though. Surge is used a lot, public outcry makes it hard, and the sand counters and mysterio's illusions can be tedious. I don't think it is horribly balanced though. In my view expert campaigns are supposed to be the hardest experience you can get in marvel champions. I don't go into expert campaigns looking for things to be manageable. Things feeling out of control and difficult make it feel like expert to me! That said though, I've been able to beat the expert campaign for sinister motives with many different heroes. I don't think it is undoable. Since you really love Spider-Man the addition of the Spder-Man villains and getting Miles and Gwen would be be very fun for you. There are advantages and disadvantages. The villains in redskull are simpler. Sinister Motives villains are more complicated, but I don't think they are overly complicated. You will likely struggle greatly with Venom Goblin because he is debatably the hardest villain in the game. I don't view that as a negative because with the 3 villains fromt he core box and the 5 from sinister motives you have a variety of difficulties, and having a capstone difficulty is fun to me. Though, not everyone may enjoy that. Since you already have captain america, doctor strange, and scarlet witch, you are primed to get redskull and Mad Titan's Shadow and you will have a satisfying card pool, but at the same time. the spider expansion is the smallest wave, and very easy to just grab that, and then resume with other stuff. If you love the game and are planning on eventually buying most of the expansions the order won't matter so much, and if you get Spiders then go back to redskull I think that would be totally fine! So I would recommend a few different options to choose from: 1) Sinister Motives + Spider-Ham and SP//dr (Advantages: An entire spider-man wave and the ability to fully delve into the spiderverse, and have a complete set of heroes) 2) Redskull (Advantages: synergizes well with captain america, and flows nicely into the Mad Titan's Shadow which will complete your Mystic Collection except for Magik). 3) Get the green Goblin Scenario Pack (Advantages: One of the best stand alone scenarios and a fantastic spider-man villain, and it will allow you to sus out whether you want to commit to completing the spider cards before moving to the other stuff.) @@adzymack I think it is a misnomer from the community that I might also have contributed to by accident with doctor strange. I wouldn't avoid him because he is too strong. Rhino would be very easy for Doctor Strange, but Expert Klaw and Expert Ultron might surprise you with how difficult they can be. Doctor Strange is incredibly strong, but he can struggle to keep up with the drone minions and the masters of evil modular set. You might just blow through the scenarios with him, but I think one of the beautiful things about this game is that you can adjust the difficult to be whatever you want. The jump from standard to expert is massive, and the modular sets can also change the game significantly. I almost lost to standard rhino on stream the other day because the Arcade and Sinister Syndicate modulars were so difficult! Another interesting thing about rhino is how difficult he is in solo. He hits hard, and if you flip to alter ego and he gets an advance, then you just lose the game in one turn. The higher the player count the easier he gets, whereas other villains are the opposite and get harder with more players. Ultron can be incredibly difficult to manage in high player counts. There are strategies present in the core box that can defeat him, which I won't spoil here, but you might wanna bust out doctor strange and captain america when you see what ultron can do! If you wanna join my discord and keep me updated on how your games go I would love to hear about it!

@@DaringLimeI have opened Dr Strange, Ms Marvel, Wolverine, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, X-23. I also own, but have not opened (I am playing through Core Box, Goblin, and RoRS campaign with pairs of each hero I already opened first) Cyclops, Rogue, Quicksilver, SPDR, Ant-man, and Gambit. Love them all although I haven’t played as Hulk or Strange yet (unpopular take here but I don’t prefer to play with “mystic” spells, but got him for the other green cards)

Great video, thank you! I wish I had something this comprehensive when I got into the game last year. One quick thing: Goliath will come back in with Make the Call without the ATK buff, and in fact due to the 'once per phase' clause won't be able to activate it again the second time around. I think that second part is a little strange if he's treated as a new instance of the card when he comes back, but that's the ruling they went with I guess.

I looked into that ruling and it is convoluted. It seems like it ends up being based on the ruling of "max" . I agree with you that it is strange. Thanks for pointing it out!

I really like Fantasy Flights LCG model. I play all three. When I got interested in Marvel Champions after The Mad Titan's Shadow dropped I just picked up everything before and from there bought everything as it has been released. Now I have other things going on where I only recently started playing the game. I bought it up before I could play it because I saw what happened with the LOTR LCG and I don't want to play the out of print game. I saw that coming and when Fantasy Flight did their last official reprint I bought in bulk like it was Costco to complete my collection. I like guides like this because it helps me plan how I want to experience the game. Also makes me feel good about my approach because when you say things like if you can get Dr Strange or Captain America I can breath easy because I took care of that part. This is a great guide with lots of detail so I can listen and plan my approach to experiencing the content. Good job and much appreciated!

That's amazing to hear! That is exactly what I had hoped would happen for people. The overwhelming positive feedback on this has been inspiring for me to make more content. Getting everything is totally worth it! I am just now getting into the lord of the rings. I started with the revised core set. I was gonna play my first game of it this weekend. I'm really happy that I jumped in on the revised version and not the original lol! And it seems like FFG learned from LOTR and Arkham and Marvel champions seems to have dodged a lot of the problems those games had.

@@DaringLime this was the first video of yours I have seen and you fit the mold for the good content creators in this space. You took your time, developed concepts and explained your approach. I think the community for this game will embrace you because your in line with the quality of the folks I would consider the bellwethers for this space. So I am happy you are encouraged and I think you should be. Now a sidebar about Arkham and LOTR. The design for philosophy for those two is a much more brutal experience then Marvel Champions. Whereas Marvel Champions you should win the majority of the time those two you should be losing a lot lol. The designer who went on to do Earthborne Rangers talks about this. The revised editions of those games is a better set up. Getting the compressed package of a campaign and then all the player cards is so much better. Arkham I started under the revised model, which is way better collecting experience then the small scenario boxes and adventure packs. Basically everything can fit in the campaign boxes. Also Arkham has been commercially successful enough to get a full reprint and new content. LOTR I got everything before they revised it. I started collecting that game from the very begining lost interest and came back at the end just before they stopped reprinting. In the LOTR case no new content and everything is not going to be reprinted. That sucks for collectors and those who want to get the full story of the game. It also sucks for the card pool. Let me highlight A big difference with LOTR and Marvel Champions. For the most part in champions you can pick a theme for a hero and build that deck and it should in most cases work for just about all villians, there are exceptions i.e. Venom Goblin. But Marvel really lets you explore ideas and there are multiple viable builds to play. You don't need a lot of content to get moving. LOTR differs in that building decks is a more complex venture, but very satisfying. Deck concepts need more tinkering. LOTR you build decks for scenarios a lot! Back with the old core set people would buy two and even three sets to have a full card pool just to beat the last scenario Escape from Dol Guldur, which in true solo is absolutely brutal, especially if you don't have a full card pool in the core. Revised edition core solved this. A lot of scenarios in that game you need to build for. Then there are the out of print nightmare decks in some cases they were challenges, or they changed up scenario mechanics or they adjusted scenarios and made them better. There was a ton of supplemental content for LOTR. Lots of things to tweak the experience. I leave you with this comparison to explain the different nature of these games. LOTR is like collecting old 45 albums there are all sorts of editions to get and playing your records is done on special equipment, Marvel Champions is being into music in the current digital era. You can download a whole album and play it just about anywhere on anything. LOTR is your into microbrew beer, Marvel Champions is I like a lot of different get it at the supermarket beer, Sam Adams might be the most exotic thing you get. As you gave a detailed video I think you'll like this detailed response.

@@rpiazza72 You're right I did like it! That is really useful info! I have played arkham through the core box campaign once with a friend. I don't own arkham. I played Skids O'Toole and we won the first two scenarios but then had to resign on the last one because we didn't find enough of the cultists in the second scenario. It was interesting how punishing it was in the third scenario for the second one not going perfect. Marvel champions doesn't do that. What you said about lord of the rings is really intersting! I'm wondering how it'll go for me playing through the core box. I'll probably make a video on it sharing my experience with the transition from being able to handle all the scenarios in Marvel Champions on expert to starting LOTR. Thanks for the detailed response!

@@DaringLime in the Marvel Champions space you’ll find other LOTR people first one that comes to mind is Boom Guy from the Winning Hand podcast. I think you’ll enjoy the revised core set experience. A video on your experience would be interesting. People are coming into the LOTR experience and it’s interesting to see the mix of new and old players the game started in 2011. If people really like it thats when they go down the rabbit hole and find out about all the out of print content. Don’t look anything up play the core set fresh and if you like it then jump down the rabbit hole. But I do think you’ll find an audience for this sort of crossover video I would certainly watch it.
