Hi and welcome to our online bed buying guide my name's Ryan and I’m the founder of John Ryan By Design the UK's premier independent mattress
retailer.
Some people have never bought a mattress online and find the concept novel. The reality is that you should be able to get much more value for money by buying a mattress online.
The reason is that online retailers don't have the same overheads as bricks and mortar showrooms do and that's before the pushy salespeople
get paid!
This means that you get more for your money by cutting out middleman.
The figures from the National Bed Federation are clear - people that buy a mattress online are just as satisfied with their purchase as those that are bought in the store.
In this video we're going to discuss the pros and cons of buying a mattress online. What to look out for and what to avoid! Ensuring your new mattress will provide years of happy sleep.
First you need to decide on your budget and then stick to it. It's easy for your budget to creep up so decide before you start your search but the opposite is also true once you've set a budget aim to get as much
mattress as you can for that money rather than trying to come in way under budget with something that probably is unsuitable.
So how are we going to get the most out of your budget? My top tip is don't fall for the sales. Mattress sales are very rarely genuine don't be tricked into thinking that you're getting a bargain.
Ignore sales prices and recommended retail prices they're absolute nonsense they're there to trick you out of your hard earned money.
I would go so far as to say that if you land on a site where everything is on sale with flashing red banners it's probably best avoided as this indicates questionable sale tactics.
Examples of this are the never-ending sales at DFS or how difficult it is to find a full price bed at Bensons for Beds. Okay so we set our budget and now we're going to drill down into what we want in
a mattress. For this video, I’m going to focus on
pockets sprung mattresses as they're the most popular at the
moment in the UK. Check out our channel well for other types of mattresses.
Mattress spring counts should be between 1000 and 2000 you really don't need any more than this. Don't assume that the higher the spring count the better the mattress it's a common misconception. Also spring counts have nothing to do with firmness it's the gauge of the spring that determines the firmness of a mattress, not the number of
springs.
So aiming between one and two thousand springs is best.
Next we need to think about the comfort layers with mattress. Do you want premium cooler natural fibres or more affordable man-made fibres maybe a mix of both? You must find out the breakdown of the comfort layers i'm going to repeat this because it's so important you must find out what the breakdown of the comfort layers are! If you don't know this it's to
buying a car without knowing what engine it has. A reputable retailer will tell you layer by layer and gram by gram what the comfort layers are.
Beware of a listing along the lines of contains silk mohair and wool it's meaningless without any figures to back it up.
Mattress manufacturers only need to include 1% of any fibre to be able to show it on the label and a fair few charlatans do, so please be careful!
With this in mind your next step should be to check the reputation of the retailer you're buying from.
Ask yourself the following three questions. 1. How long have they been
trading? 2. What are their google reviews like? 3. What
is their trust pilot score?
