ok so. I watched through this whole thing, So i can say that most of what he is reccomending right here is for 4K, unlike very known people, you won't find any small content creators and filmmakers use that resolution. As a small content creator myself i can say that 1080p is a very good place to start at. And i also used a lot of editing softwares, including premiere pro and after effects, i also use davinci resolve for now. And i edit on a not high end machine. I am editing on a laptop. I have 8gb of DDR4 RAM, Ryzen 5 2500U and a radeon vega 8 as a gpu which has 256mb of dedicated video ram. And from my experience i can reccomend that you should use at MOST 32gb of ram, but the sweet spot is 16gb of ram clocked at 3200MHz, a ryzen 5 processor and a radeon RX 460 as a good enough 1080p editing machine. Yes i am aware of the fact that this video is a bit outdated. But that's no excuse to reccomend a core i7 as a processor. AMD made really good CPUs with they zen architecture in 2017. So a ryzen 5 1600 would be more than good enough to edit at 1080p or 4k. You might have some stutters but it will work in 4K. The only thing i agree on is the storage. You should have 2 SSDs and a HDD, one SSD as the boot drive and put the editing software on it, one SSD to save your projects on to load them faster and a HDD to save your videos on. I'll try and see if i can find a video i watched a few days ago about a good 4k Editing pc for cheap

Thanks for the review and advice. I have been thinking for s few days about purchasing a desktop for editing because I just ordered some pretty nice new camera equipment (by my standards anyways), but then decided that it would be much more rewarding to build one instead. I am freshly retired, still kind of young and I love the outdoors and working a bit with photography. So I figured that I would try and mix the two hobbies together. Now, I am so completely technologically impaired that it's frustrating. I've learned quite a lot over the last few days of watching everyones versions of their greast PC builds. And I agree with them. Their knowledge of the systems, the components and the way that they interact with each other towards sn end result, have been in most cases very impressive and informative.

Thanks for the video. It has definitely given me a lot of food for thought. One question you did not address was the cost of buying individual components vs buying a complete system assembled by someone else. I am a former bicycle mechanic who used to assemble complete road bikes from frames and components that I purchased online. THe process was rewarding, but I found I never really saved that much money. I wanted performance, which meant I needed the best components I could afford. By the time I bought each component and assembled it onto a frame, I had spent almost as much as I would have if I purchased the entire bike as a complete unit from an online retailer. For those who assemble computers, I have to wonder if the same concept applies?

CPU (brain of computer - make sure to see what cpu is best match with editing software - spend most money in this area - get higher clock speed over a processor with more cores) 4. VIDEO CARD or GPU (the ram that is in the gpu’s is not that important for video editing so 2gb or 4gb will do fine) 5. @mgr5550

I honestly edit 4K on an i3 (6th Gen, 16GB 2400 RAM, SSD OS, 16TB working & render disks). What is honestly gonna take forever ? The editing experience or the render wait time. Ill bet its the render wait time. I can wait. The working experience is almost the same and the timeline scrub and playback etc is more dependent on your HDD bottleneck and GPU. If someone is honestly such a big "time is money" studio where your churning out videos for clients waiting in a line then yes, render time counts. But then those kind of guys aren't usually on KZitem discussing specs.
@FabianLanfold
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, actually I don't get people just looking for "good render times" benchmarks when you just can wait, whatever it takes (assuming you're not making professional work). How fast a CPU/GPU can encode or render a video shows only one part of the whole deal. What one really needs look for is a cpu that can deliver a good editing experience, when you're doing the actual work, timeline smoothness, not dropping FPS during playback and not lagging when applying effects.
@mgr5550
6 жыл бұрын
Fabian > Yes i honestly feel the working experience is more important and needs more focus than render times. And look at the render times on an i7 vs an i5. Its marginal only. Its not like next grade means quarter the render time etc. But again it depends on who your are and how fast you NEED to render. Most of web video makers prefer to wait the additional 15 minutes or even 2 hours and be done with it.

So its not worth investing too much on these things unless you can convert it back into money within just a year. Hmm. The fastest CPU is only a little faster than the second fastest. I'd look at the price list as an aid. There are two kinds of SSD. Those packaged as replacement spinning disks, and those that plug into the motherboard. I know about the M.2 form factor, that's your second SSD. I didn't recognise the first. There are two kinds of M.2 SSDs. It's essential that your SSD matches your motherboard (or plugin card). SATA SSDs are slower than PCIe NVRM SSDs. The latter are much faster, but also more expensive. Your RAM doesn't need to be faster than your CPU requires for its top performance. That computer has lots of USB3.0 ports. USB3.1 is much faster. The A ports have red tongues, not the blue I saw. I don't like USB 2 ports, there's no good reason for them these days. Clock speed isn't a good comparison of CPU performance across different brands, generations or series of CPUs. I'm counting i3, it, i7 and i9 as different series. If it matters, look for comparative benchmarks. Probably Intel and AMD have useful comparisons within their own products.

I'm always amazed that when people are talking about video editing PCs they are all worried about performance. No one looks at reliability. One has to assume that if you can justify $2,000+ for video editing, that you are making money doing this and thus your time and the video itself is more important than the hardware. If you do this 20 hours a week, 200 days a year... a 10% performance increase saves you say 80 hours over the year. However, if there is a 10% chance that anything fails... you are out of business for a days and that costs you far more since you can add lost work, destroyed video, missed deadlines, etc. IMO, for this type of professional work, any solution should also include things such as NAS (backup, storage), offline storage, RAID or mirror drive solutions, possibly dual PCs, etc. with clear failure plans for the OS, drive, motherboard, networking, etc. Having two PCs might be an option -- less each might be less powerful, but you can work one while another is rendering away. It might also help keep the non-critical uses of the PC (i.e. games) on a different machine. If not, at least having options to quickly replace drives or the PC itself if something fails -- spare drives with the OS mirrored, backups or the video on NAS or at least USB drives, etc.

Great video Justin...as always. When you talk about your rendering speeds....so that I can compare, how long would it typically take you to render say 5mins of video in 4K and in HD?. Cheers mate, and have a great Christmas.

We'll have a video out really soon with a heap of info on the render times but it really comes down to what software you're using, how complex your timeline / edit is and if you're using GPU effects or not on your timeline too.

All i want to know is will a budget computer in the range of $400-700 be enough to make good videos?
@PrimalVideo
5 жыл бұрын
Define 'good videos'... Are you talking, high resolution footage, VFX, and SFX? If so, chances are a budget computer won't cut it. BUT, if by good, you mean a good story... well you can shoot a good story on anything. Figure out what kind of videos you want to make and then you'll know what kind of computer you need. Good luck!

Great video bro! Something else to consider with smaller systems is "Does the device or motherboard support external GPUs?" With my system size was the main battle so, I purchased a powerful yet extremely small form factor computer (see below.) I use it to edit video and light gaming. Since my main gpu is externally connected via Thunderbolt 3, I can easily travel with my full system leaving the GPU at home and using the integrated graphics on the road DJing. This setup means 1 computer for all my needs. Basically I have a powerhouse modular desktop (complete system minus eGPU is the size of a portable HD) which is perfect for music production and flexible enough to seriously edit and render videos. Micro Rig Stats: Skullcayon nuk (size of portable HD) 32 GB ram 2 1tb Samsung m2 drives 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-6770HQ 2.6 GHz up to 3.5 GHz Turbo, Quad Core 6MB cache GPU Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 580 (when DJing or producing music) Or ASUS ROG GTX 1060-06G 6GB via Thunderbolt 3 and Akitio Node (editing video or gaming) Monitor 1503i Gechic touch screen (USB powered) with rear hdmi dock and backplate vesa mount.
@PrimalVideo
6 жыл бұрын
Good idea, there's a lot of people using eGPU's for video editing on laptops. They can be pretty buggy though and you don't get the full power out of the cards on most external enclosures but there's definitely a huge performance jump for editing and gaming using one :)
@Hex_ESM
6 жыл бұрын
Justin Brown - Primal Video, the main issue I see is people not understanding port speed of thunderbolt 3 and slapping to highend of a card in the eGPU. I always tell friends to look at manufacturer's compatible list and stick to one of those cards only. Intel's skullcanyon has had zero glitches with the Akitio Node. I tested the GPU inside my wife's computer and after benchmarking the eGPU was averaging 95-97% with the card I picked. Again I didn't buy a larger GPU then I needed and stuck in the middle of the compatibility list (compatibility wise).

Continued... However, I like your style of communication and ability to make things more clear for me without over-teching me for the level of experience I'm currently at. So saying, your review has been the most help for me. Thank you for that! My equipment is capable of using up to 6k. I don't know what I would do at this point with the 6k abilities, But I will definately use still photography and pixel shift images. I will also use of some 4k, and definitely UHD. But I would like to have the propper tools to work in the upper ranges of recording levels if the situation were to arise. If I make a list of everything you have in this PC build video, so that I can get the parts as soon as possible, would you feel as though there are any changes to be made to from the components of your machine in the review, to possibly updated equipment, or any components that would better suit my needs. And if so, will you please tell me what should be changed? Or will that machine just smoke through anything that I might throw at it? Thank you very much! Very respectfully, Jason ("JW")

Hi Justin !Great video! I got a question.I have a 13” 2015 MacBook Pro. When streaming ( KZitem , Vimeo, etc) it is great, full HD, 4K all looks great. The problem I’m having is when I import videos from my cameras in Full HD 1920 by 1080 p.No matter what media player I use ( including Premiere Pro) the footage is degraded( not in full 1080p). The screen doesn’t support 1080p( although like I said works fine when watching KZitem), and it’s not possible to set the screen at that resolution.How do I solve this problem? Thanks. Jose

Another question. It sounds like you don't use background rendering. So doesn't that mess things up because then what you're working on isn't the final product? Im worried about my audio sounding different after upload. Otherwise I would turn off background rendering. I want my project to look like the real thing!
