Ok, I am finally getting time to restart mission to catch fish. (Yes, I am an "old guy.") Your video was perfect for relearning all the basic things I have forgotten. And your style of showing us the various options made your comments believable. Too many "fish experts" talk about the $250 rod, $200 reel, and some super "whiz-bang" bait that they swear by. This video is great for the new guy looking to not spend a fortune to get started. Subscribed and will now spend this "stay-at-home" time to watch your other videos. Looking forward to learning all the way back up to "expert."

Good info. I built my first rod using some of this guidance. It’s a Shakespeare 6’6” Ultralight Fast Action with a Cadence 2000 series spinning reel. Set it up with 6lb monofilament line for trout fishing in medium width rivers/streams. Planning to use it this week. All in, I think it cost me about $100 to get set up and that was including a small kit with some lures and hooks and stuff.

I'm glad you're showing that you don't have to be rich to fish. Every sport has gotten so specialized and people can be "reel" snobs when it comes to gear. Fish don't care where you buy your gear or what you pay for it. Just read, study and practice. Thanks

The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzitem.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

I love those Berkley Cherrywood rods. Bought one recently and loved it. Sadly my brother accidentally broke it on the forth of July (he was putting stuff in my trunk and drunkenly snapped it with his cooler.) I’m currently using a Daiwa Samurai X with the Abu Garcia reel from the Berkley pole and it’s great and all, but definitely want to get another one and an Ugly Stick soon.

Great video! Been thinking about switching out from monofilament to braided line. One thing I hate about monofilament line are the tangles. Those tangles can definitely cost you fish! I use Shakespeare products exclusively. The Uglystiks are definitely the most durable rods I've ever used, and I believe that I'll stick with 'em until the day I draw my last breath! I'm totally devoted to you, Shakespeare! Thanks for the video, and God bless you and your family! Also:Thanks for the Spiderwire tip. Even nearly 30 years ago, when that stuff came out, I began hearing bad reports about the product. No way I'll ever use it! Give our friend, the People's Champ, D. J. a Wassup from me! One other thing:Try not to feed him too many boiled eggs, ok? Don't want our homie to get sick, that's all. Later!

Me personally I prefer a 2000 size reel when Crappie fishing, with anything lower I find the spool to be too small and it lowers your castability quite drastically. There's just too much friction when tryna make long casts from the bank on a 1000 or lower. You can get away with a 1500 but I still prefer the 2000 size, love that Pfleuger Trion reel it has a superior drag system, VERY SMOOTH REEL!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND and it's extremely sensitive, yet it's a little pricey at 45$ if your on a budget but it's well worth it.
