Everyone has a dream car. Whether it’s a half-million dollar exotic, a classic, or even a brand new luxury car, enthusiasts of all age rangers dream about driving them every day. You might even have the poster up in your childhood room, or a die cast model. But some of us never even get to drive our dream cars, much less own it. This episode of Chasing Dust isn’t about the off-road life. Instead, Matt introduces you to his all-time dream car that he just bought for himself, a 2003 Mustang SVT Coba “Terminator”.
The 2003-2004 Ford Mustang wasn’t an exciting car. It was a far departure in looks from the classic Mustangs, and lacked many of the iconic design elements most Mustang fans like most about the iconic pony car. But in those years, Ford’s SVT, or Special Vehicles Team, built a car that would ultimately become an instant fan favorite, and dominate the competition.
Internally nicknamed the “Terminator”, the 03-04 Cobra was the most powerful production Mustang ever built. Underrated by Ford at 390 crank horsepower, Terminator owners were routinely putting down 400+ horsepower to the rear wheels with their bone stock cars. It wasn’t long before the aftermarket caught wind of the massive power potential for these cars, and began developing parts to push them into never-before-seen power ranges in the Mustang’s history.
This is what made the Terminator an iconic car. Gobs of horsepower thanks to a supercharged 4.6L V8, mated to a brutal 6-speed T56 manual transmission, and riding on four-wheel independent transmission. Ford built this car for the enthusiast, and it delivered on every level.
Why is this the “DesertChief’s” dream car? His first car ever was a 1999 Mustang GT. With it’s lowly 240 horsepower V8 and 5-speed, it was plenty powerful for a 15 year old gear head. But the ultimate model of this era’s Mustang was the Terminator, and it was always out of his reach.
Matt didn’t hesitate when he found this car for sale on an online auction. Buying a car you’ve never seen, and having it shipped 3000 miles on an open trailer was quite the gamble, but it paid off this time. Matt’s new purchase has him feeling like he’s in high school all over again, and added a formidable example of late-model domestic muscle to his stable of vehicles.
In this episode, Matt goes over some of the modifications that have already been made to his new Cobra, and some of his plans for the future of driving it. Although it’s already rolling on a set of Nitto NT555’s, Matt wants to swap these out for a the next generation of Nitto’s proven performance tire, the NT555 G2.
Matt takes us on a test drive to show us the raw power from this supercharged V8, and talks about the drivability and handling as well. Before wrapping up the episode, Matt talks a bit about the feeling he gets when he’s behind the wheel of the Terminator, and why this nostalgic feeling is what molded him into a car enthusiast so many years ago.
