The worst thing is that isn’t even the first time Adam’s content has been taken advantage of, when I was still following him it came out that a popular Sundance movie stole from one of Adam’s horror comics verbatim. Adam Ellis, the artist who originally made the Dear David ARG (which I personally think is really cool and completely different from this mess) was actually a comic artist at buzzfeed when he started the ARG. One of his Buzzfeed comics is the one featured in this trailer, since they still own that IP, but I don’t know how involved he is with the project. I follow him on Instagram since he’s got some good comics here and there, but he hasn’t posted anything about this movie as far as I can tell. Buzzfeed announced back in 2018 that they wanted to make a movie out of the story, but that was so long ago and I know that any relationship Adam had with Buzzfeed has definitely soured since then
@nightmarefanatic1819
Жыл бұрын
The problem is an ARG is fun because of the interactivity and the versimillitude granted by having them posted in the real world web. Making a cinematically shot film out of it robs an ARG of what made it so special in the first place. And the one time a horror movie DID try to pull an interactive internet stunt, it sucked. Nah dude, Adam just made the whole thing up for clicks. Like, there was no "ARG" involved in his thought process. Plus ARGs were around A LOT longer than when this whole fiasco came out. If you look at Adam Ellis' art now, he's made SO much improvement since he quit BuzzFeed, he does his own short horror stories and they're actually quite good! What's really funny is knowing that the reason people dunked on Adam's comics when he was working for Buzzfeed was because due to their deadlines for comics, he was forced to produce stuff even when he didn't have great ideas for comics / proper time to draw something visually unique. That's why his comics looked so copy paste when he was working for BF and now he's not working for them, his comics are so much more visually appealing with different & dynamic angles and a lot of effort put into them. So for Buzzfeed to make the main cause of the movie's plot be him getting dunked on for the quality of his comics, a problem that Buzzfeed basically caused by being a shitass company, is hilarious.

I gave to give it to them, though. The idea of a horror movie based off of Twitter in general would be genuinely horrifying. Even being on the platform for more than 5 minutes is terrifying, especially when you click on a Twitter thread and scroll for more than a few seconds.

To be fair, Dear David was a fun ARG/unfiction story. When it was first coming out it was a pretty interesting story and I still think its pretty neat. After seeing the trailer I'm a bit disappointed in how the story seems to have been changed, and how David looks compared to the photos in the original story. It scared the shit out of me as a kid so I'm a little sad to see what happened to it but as long as they had fun making it then whatever. The original pictures of David were 100x scarier than the whole trailer sadly I suggest watching Reignbot's old video's going over the original thread if anyone is interested in the original story.

They haven't been working on this consistently for the 5+ years since it was last popular, so unless they reach a level of making people work so hard it releases in 2017 I don't see how '80-100hr work weeks are actually a good thing' crunch comes into it. It's not that they fumbled the ball because they weren't putting enough work on their employees, it's that they didn't care about it until now. After all, a property can make money forever, right? /s

When this story ramped up in popularity I was a young teenager and the way the latin american youtuber Dross related the story of Dear David really gave me chills, that I believed it was true even tough I was aware of being a made up thing. I genuinely think what Buzzfeed is doing is just a snore fest with the predictable and horrendous horror formula to be honest, a 100% flop.

The thing that’s baffling to me is that their plot for this movie isn’t even remotely similar to what the actual twitter thread was about. The original thread was just a typical haunting story where the writer moved into this apartment and there was the ghost of a boy living there. The ghost child didn’t die from anything related to their moral about trolling either. He died after a shelf or something in a grocery store nearby fell on him and crushed his skull. Ofc the ghost of David wanted to kill him bc why not, but the reason was because the author asked him 3 questions instead of just 2 like he was told by someone in the area. Also when you factor in that the person who created the original thread was/isn’t involved with the production of the film is telling to say the least

Even the Spongebob movie is scarier than this. Obviously, it was not horror and made for kids, but it had its moments. -The old lady anglerfish thing -Dennis was genuinely threatening. He was a straight-up murderer. -The scene of them getting taken by the "cyclops" was pretty tense with the music and his size compared to Spongebob and Patrick -Plankton was the most serious we've ever seen. He took over the whole town, turning everyone into slaves and was ready to kill them to get his way.

The image of a child with a grotesque deformity staring at you while you try to sleep is genuinely terrifying. But when you try to explain it, you remove the thing that made it terrifying in the first place. The story is the images. Out of topic here: Another Buzzfeed employee named Matthew who worked at Tasty channel (Buzzfeed's cooking channel) was in Season 20 Hell's Kitchen as a contestant and he was completely a fucking trainwreck for 2 episodes straight from being bad at Signature Dish Challenge, Another challenge called Punishment Pass Challenge and even to Opening Night Dinner Service. He was even get caught to use digital thermometer which is pretty much illegal to use it on Hell's Kitchen because a good chef doesn't need thermometer to check the temperature of the meat. Watching him getting obliterated by Gordon Ramsay, a professional chef himself, is so satisfying and show that Buzzfeed is indeed the most useless company ever.
