Featuring Ubu, the owl Picasso managed to keep as a pet. Ubu was bad-tempered, smelled awful, preferred to eat his mice alone and was very unhappy. When he sniffed, Pablo called him a pig.
Pablo felt very connected. He considered owls to be his ancestors and appreciated the similarities in the face, the staring eyes & his own beak-like nose, the dislike for people.
Ubu inspired him. The owl was associated with ceramics from ancient Greece. Goddess Athena had deceived the Persians in the disguise of an owl and was frequently spotted on pottery. Representing tactical intelligence she was a wise owl. The metamorphoses and stories on ancient vases were brought back to life in Picasso's hands.
Like the Berlin painter 2,500 years before him, he was very aware of the shape of a vase and used that to paint the surface, transforming its presence.
Pablo's 3D ceramics are among his best 2D drawings. Masterfully simple, lively, energetic, meaningful, funny and cute. Robust, primitiveness at its strongest and inventive.
