I've heard many recordings of this cantata, this one is certainly one of the best. Transparent, beautiful singing and playing, thanks to the small ensemble a nice intimate atmosphere.

Okay, I may have just become a Jonathan Hanley superfan. Beautiful, clear timbre. Solid, easy low notes (not so common for a tenor!) as well as high ones. Expressive phrasing, committed delivery, great clarity of line in the choruses. Excellent trill. And absolutely terrific diction. Wow.

Thank you all very much for your hard work to present this Easter gift to the world under pandemic conditions. Loved the voices, the diction, the instruments, the translated subtitles, the setting, and the camera and recording work. More people need to hear this video, so I'll be sharing it. Soli Deo gloria!

This has nothing to do with a "pandemic size" ensemble, it is the amount of musicians and singers Bach needed, had and still needs today as was proven by the Bach specialists Joshua Rifkin and Andrew Parrott!

hey, just a random chorus member doing his homework here. was here for "es war ein wunderlicher Krieg", and thought what you've accomplished with only 4 singers was AMAZING! that song inherently has such little breathing room amidst that many Germans lyrics that need every consonant to be taken care of, and they were delivered perfectly!

4 solistes au lieu du chœur , c’est surprenant au 1er abord, mais c’est très beau ; leurs timbres sont clairement identifiées ; de même pour les instruments (viole, théorbe). Le résultat est magnifique

Absolutely beautiful the ensemble and the voices BUT the accelerare in the Halleluja of the first choir is not necessary. I had the chance of doing this cantata with Thomaskantor herr Hans-Joachim Rotzsch and he didn't increased the tempo signifincantly; he just let him go with the natural rythim of the semiquavers in the score. Notwithstanding the aforementioned, I think this is one of the most beautiful verisions of this cantata I´ve ever heard. Congrats!!!!

I love continuo in alto & soprano versus (theorbo impro wow!) and slow-ish tempo in Basso versus giving it major gravitas. Middle chorus a little rushed (for me) at the expense of stability and “Die Schrift hat verkündet das” coming into its own. Appreciate times are tight but really missed the colla parte cornets and sackbuts in choral movements. Would love details on cello, great solid resonant sound. Great effort overall, excellent voices and instrument playing!

I really like the bass soloist. I'm glad he sings the low E2 (one ledger line below the bass staff). I as a bass singer myself cringe when I hear some baritone alter the music so he doesn't sing the low E.

@mwnyc3976

First, my apologies for not replying in Italian. Performing BWV 4 without cornett and trombones is legitimate. Bach is known to have performed this piece three times: in 1707 in Mühlhausen, and in 1724 and 1725 in Leipzig. Only in 1725 did he use the cornett and trombones.
