I love Richter but his accelerated rendition of the a minor duet disappoints me. Of course he hits the right notes but I don't hear more than a virtuoso fingering exercise.

I think it was Nikolayeva who started the fashion, seen in other Russian pianists, to play the fourth duet very slowly, as a kind of mystical meditation. When I saw the sheet music for the first time, not having heard her, my instinct was that it should be played Allegro, perhaps not quite as fast as Richter's version. It reminded me of the first movement of the organ trio sonata no 2 in c minor, BWV526, a tough intransigent piece marked (I think by Bach himself) Vivace. At any rate there are certainly two speeds at which you can play this duet and both have their points. On the other hand I think that Richter plays the third duet much too fast, losing its lyricism. However, the first two are just right and wonderful.
