I played keyboards for 3 different productions of Godspell. My parents loved to come see the shows I was involved in, but because I did mot think they would understand or appreciate Godspell’s quirky vibe I did not offer until they asked what I was currently involved in, and expressed interest in seeing it. After a Saturday evening performance I headed out to the lobby not knowing what to expect. My father could hardly speak he was so moved, and had clearly been weeping. I should have trusted that true to form, Godspell always works it’s. God-inspired magic.

@@johnmartindoylemusic1610 In Scripture, you see certain signs and symbols repeated throughout books of both Old and New Covenants, like water, blood, wine, etc. Rocks and stones are another: God the Father as Rock, Christ as Rock and Cornerstone, Simon renamed as Rock (Cephas or Petra), the Lord's ability to raise up new descendants of Abraham from stones and houses built on rock. There are many people who believe in a theory called the composite Mary Magdalene (from where the idea she was a prostitute and the woman saved from stoning comes). I've read that was true of the writing of this song as well, and the woman who sings By My Side is loosely based on Mary Magdalene. So, in the songwriter's mind, there may be a correlation between being saved from stoning and then putting a stone in her own shoe - kind of how a composite Mary Magdalene might carry her own cross.

This has been my favorite song since I first saw a stage production of it in '74. Thank you so very much for this memory! The meaning is so precious and deep, and I've sung it often when needing to remember who I am, why I'm here. "Day by Day" is also wonderful!

I also saw a stage production in 1974 (at South Coast Rep in Costa Mesa, Ca.) as part of my college's orientation week. It was totally unforgettable, and I've enjoyed the show ever since.

Either these actors all deserve an Oscar or they truly believe in what they are singing. I was 8 years old when this movie was made and I fell in love with that freckled redhead from the moment I first heard her sing this song.

No, she had just performed the song over a hundre times. Katie and Jeff were both from the OBC (original broadway cast). And just fyi. Godspell was written by a Jew. Stephen Schwartz is a Jew, like me. And I don't think he gives a second thought to Jesus because Jesus doesn't really come up in conversation among Jews.

Today, for the gazillionth time, I was running across a city street, and the slightest bit of gravel got caught in my shoe, .. and I immediately started up with “I’ll put a pebble in my shoe, and watch me walk ...” etc ... until I got safely across and leaned against a traffic sign to balance while I dislodge the pebble. But tonight, I suddenly stopped facebooking or whatever to wonder, WHAT Is that little ditty I invariably lean in to when that happens?” (And have, for nearly 50 years of summer sandals) ... “I shall call the pebble “Dare!” Well, so sweet now, to have the entire scene ... and, um all of Salvation ... reminded me. Thank you.

Not many people know this but, this was the first single issued from the original red cover Gospel album. It got limited air play and was a lower chart single. The record company followed it up with the Robin Lamont (The blond) song, "Day By Day" that turned into a hit. I use to sing this song to my children and I also sang it at a Good Friday church service.
