At the time, Glossier was a breath of fresh air to those of us who either didn’t look good with, or weren’t interested in, the cut - crease, ultra - contoured, dramatic false lashes, and overly sculpted eyebrows look of the 2010s. People are so quick to forget history, I think. At that time, if someone didn’t have those makeup looks, they were made to feel ugly, or that their makeup was “wrong,” etc. And then entered a brand like Glossier that seemed to tell us, “Hey, it’s okay to want to look like yourself! It’s okay to want to look polished but still recognizable.”

I'm an older mature woman, and I've worked in retail my whole life, including some beauty retail shops. I have to say that this type of behavior in retail spaces is so common. Customers treating POC differently, and management turning a blind eye to it, or blaming the employee, then placating rude customers. One thing I've learned over and over in my life - never trust a company's branding. We've all heard of greenwashing at this point. Well there's inclusivity-washing too. So never fall in love with a brand's marketing, they are just trying to get your money. Find out if they stand behind their image. Very few live up to their image. Having said that, as an older woman, I find Glossier style products really work well with my type of skin. Older women can't use heavy foundation or overly pigmented products. Well, of course you can use whatever you like, but most aging skin loses some pigmentation, becomes more dry, and gains some texture. So really minimal, glowing products look great because they don't dry the skin or worsen the appearance of texture. Futuredew is a favorite product for me, and often I use it instead of foundation. In fact, I'd love to know if there are other products out there that do the same thing. And when it comes to shade range, they dropped the ball with their foundation, but Boy Brow is one of the only brow products that come in gray to match my hair color. So those are the two products I still buy from Glossier - gray Boy Brow and Futuredew. If you have alternatives to these products that work basicaly the same, I'd love to hear of them.
@PeacefulSeraph

Have you tried the Natasha Denona Hy-Glam serum primer? It's very much like future dew and it doesn't feel as heavy (but still has a very dewy finish). I have dry skin and use that under Ilia foundation serum (which is pretty oily on its own) and it makes me glow. I'm 40 btw, so I'm always looking for minimal looks that don't settle on dry skin.

Look at By Terry’s complexion products, and the Chanel skin tint-prestige brands tend to cater to a slightly older clientele, meaning richer formulations. I really appreciate talking about the retail employee experiences, as I worked retail management for years and saw this kind of micro (and not so micro) aggression exist, often unaddressed, in the space. I literally had a SM take me aside to "ask" me about an associate who had started to wear her hair natural and if I thought it " fit the brand." I was confused, as not only did she look great, but several of the models on our site and catalogs wore their hair the same way. She dropped it, but I never really trusted her comments on that employee's deportment ever again. Edit: well, really any employee, as she mostly hired a very particular type of employee description, so anyone outside of those parameters

I understand the history of why natural hair is disliked-it’s attached to black bodies and everything associated with blackness has been demonized-but it’s still crazy to me how natural hair is viewed as unprofessional. Healthy black hair looks different from healthy white hair. The association of voluminousness and curliness with “wildness” or “unkemptness” or even “dirtiness” is so unchallenged and accepted without a thought by many people to this day.

It's so wild to me that while this brand launched in 2014, Australians will be able to buy it IRL for the first time in two weeks time. It took them A DECADE to bring their products to Oz! I know we're not a huge market but I remember being desperate to get my hands on Glossier in 2016/2017 only to find there was no way I could (they weren't shipping here yet either). So many countries were in the same boat. Love James’ take on everything. He’s always respectful but honest. I now cringe when I see any beauty product claiming to be “clean and natural”. It’s interesting how almost every “girl boss” from the 10s has gone down in flames. Emily has her issues - namely she was obsessed with Glossier being a tech company for some bizarre reason and lost the plot - but I think she had decent intentions. She doesn’t seem near as bad as say Leandra Medine. Ironically, Glossier’s newest products are pretty good but the brand is considered passé now.

Probably because if you can get in early tech creates huge profits for people at the top of these startups. There was also probably some branding and “I want to be in the business world and taken seriously, but I don’t have many ideas for a new tech product” vibes going on as well

The only complexion product they had was the Skin Tint, and each shade was sheer enough to take care of 3 - 5 different shades. So, while it’s now trendy to cry “GlOsSiEr wAsN’T iNcLuSiVe,” the Skin Tints actually WERE very inclusive in what they did, and people from that time (those who actually deigned to try the products before presenting their assessments) would agree.
@adafihj6439

@@pinagrrrr2280 when people hear inclusiveness in brands they go straight for the complexion products argument and forget that other aspects of makeup also need to be inclusive. Speaking from experience you have to consider brow products with each depth to not only match the hair but show up on dark skin. Cheek products that look good on deeper skin tones that don't look like clown makeup. Eyeshadow that actually show up on eyelids without the use of a nearly white base. When people ask to be included in brands it's not only foundation ranges we ask for. Sometimes it's about other products just showing up on the skin. I am also autistic and a very touch-oriented hands-on type of person. obviously as a 30yo I understand all of the implications and the microaggressions associated with touching black folks' hair but at the time I was a child and knew nothing about because I lived in such a predominantly white place. that said, I would have NEVER IN MY LIFE had the audacity to touch someone's hair without first asking. or touching any part of someone's body for that matter. it really all comes down to respect and that the (white) people who behave that way fundamentally do not view black people as human in the same way they view other white people. tldr; just don't fucking touching people without their permission, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THEM PERSONALLY.

17:42 ick. It is NEVER okay to physically grab anyone to get their attention when hailing them verbally will work. If an employee is hearing impaired, they will make a concerted effort to let people know. And even then, getting in their line of sight and gently or cleary waving at them is far and away much better than *grabbing them.* And dont rouch people's hair! Maybe you can ask your friends first and wait to get their permission, but this is stil so weong. Snd the fact that this was happening only to workers of color proves these customers saw BIPOC employees as, at best, lower-class people who could and should be controlled physically. And staff's refusal to shut this down immediately--whether the attitude came from higher up the chain or not--just reinforced this belief. Disgusting.

As an almost 57 yr old - mature, dry skin - their "After Balm" is a fantastic product. I use it daily. Honestly - having used Le Mer - it is the closest to it's dewy moisturizing effect I've found for sooo much less. No other brand yet has come close to how good Le Mer has treated my skin with the exception of Glossier.

I remember going to the US in 2018 and my first thought was "I need to go to the flagship store in NYC!" It was insane, I waited so long in a queue outside and we were taken to the store small groups at a time. They put us in an elevator and you'd get to the store where everyone seemed so nice. It was very strange (I'm from Europe so all of this big american experience was already intense lol) but I was just so happy to get to buy some products that I had been seeing online for years. Now 6 years later I'd never do that again but it was an overall okay experience

I love your videos-they are so informative and fascinating. I love how you break it into chapters, too. I didn't know anything about this. It's awful how those poor employees were treated! I was disgusted!! I just remember the hype around the brand and not much else; I've never bought anything from them either.

I know a lot of people said Glossier was only for people with "perfect skin"... but I have acne scars, and I never felt that way about its marketing at all. I felt like it stood for just awakening the face (like a good night of rest) and it felt very French minimalist to me. The shade range was indeed meh, & they still don't carry my shade... but neither does Chanel, YSL, Armani, Shiseido etc so I'm not new to being excluded. My favorite products were the stretch concealer, brown mascara, & cloud paint. I don't think anyone needs makeup, but I like looking awake/healthy, & that brand did it for me. It's not going to be for everyone, and I think its biggest mistake was trying to appeal to everyone. The Play products were absolute trash that I'm convinced were for 12 yr old girls just learning how to wear makeup. I don't find anything at Glossier too expensive, it's quite reasonable if you catch a sale... seeing people put it's for "rich white" people just turns my stomach. Nothing about it is rich, it's plastic bubble wrap and stickers for God's sake! But whatever... I stand by what I say, no one needs makeup, and if you think you can't leave the house without stage paint level camouflage, I'd say seek therapy. It took me years to accept my skin after being bullied for having acne. I still have ptsd from bullying... but it's not a makeup brand's problem that I feel inferior next to a model who's selling a product. I'd feel fat at a fashion show too, but that's not their problem- it's mine. Love yourself, respect yourself, you are beautiful!!

The brand is 100% rich white people coded as their shade ranges in multiple products, bts of how they treat their minority employees, and marketing reflects that. It was a demo that they cultivated as well as beyond lip service and token releases they have not done much to dispel that belief. Glossier might not be expensive to you, but that’s def not the case for others. Especially when you factor in that up until 2ish years ago if you wanted their products you had to buy from them online directly from their website as most people had no glossier stores anywhere near them. Paying shipping or buying more products to get free shipping is more expensive than driving to your local makeup store and picking up stuff that’s readily available to try. When you factor in that many glossier products are duped or can be achieved by sheering out what people already have that makes glossier look even more overpriced by comparison. Glossier’s aura of overpriced exclusivity for anyone that doesn’t fit their target mold is also not helped by fans of their products labeling anyone who wants a standard of pigment above tinted Vaseline as people who have “stage paint” for makeup and need to seek therapy… With that logic I could say glossier is for people who don’t know how or are scared of doing makeup beyond a “no makeup” makeup look and instead of admitting that fact to themselves they put others down that aren’t impressed with what glossier offers. I don’t tho cuz that’s rude. Also seeing as how current makeup trends are geared towards minimal makeup looks glossier as a brand should be flourishing esp since they’re now in Sephora. They’re not tho because at the end of the day glossier is a millennial pink “not like other girls” makeup brand that tried to copy the luxury brand formula of exclusivity and creating products for people who don’t want or are afraid of pigment/makeup, but failed because branding wise they couldn’t convince customers to put up with their shortcomings the way brands like Chanel and Dior do. It’s great the products work for you and what you’re trying to achieve, but there’s a reason the brand is now passe to others

The point is that they never used people with textured skin in their ads. You might not have realised it or paid attention to it but others did

@@LP-ct9nk You must be kidding me right? Dior and Chanel are heritage fashion houses of the ICONS and fashion GIANTS like Coco Chanel and Cristian Dior that will be known and big forever (even Coco was a nazi supporter herself) that on the way incorporated eywear and make up. Pls. Comparing those is obsolete.

@aesinam they had older women with wrinkles and therefore texture in their reels, not everyone was young with zero texture in their ads. I think what you're trying to say is scarring, deep marks or cystic acne- which they never had. But no brand features that level unless you're looking at Dermablend (which is made to cover scars, tattoos and to minimize/mattify skin so texture doesn't stand out). I used to watch shorts on Facebook with women 50+ applying Glossier and they looked great. So I'm not sure if you're just thinking about the site where they show color range, because there were always real pictures from users shown in a gallery reel on the site, and video shorts posted by them on Facebook back in the day (I'm not sure if they still do it). Glossier is sheer next to nothing coverage, it doesn't cover moles, freckles or scars- and it's moisturizing and dewy- anyone who knows anything about makeup knows oily makeup can accentuate texture. I have dry skin that was scarred by acne, slightly red by recent breakouts from that t.o.m., but I don't have pock marks or huge pores. The makeup looked fine on me, and I liked it didn't cover up every mark on my face because that's what made it look natural. I didn't set it either because my skin is dry, but at the end of the day, not every type of makeup is for every skin type, shade or texture type. But saying the models had no texture is just wrong. Like I said, they even had mature models in pics/reels and that's all anyone needs to know.
