Recently bought a Byrna SD and their new Byrna Hi Viz SD launcher for my family since getting a gun here in California has been almost impossible for the past two years and with the huge rise in crime and less than eager DAs to prosecute criminals for those crimes, it's starting to get a little less safe when we go out. At least with one of these my wife can feel a little safer when she's out and about without me. Unfortunately my son was a victim of a crime a few weeks ago when he was taken hostage on the local Sprinter on his way from college for the day. A guy got on the train drunk and got into an argument with the conductor about an open bottle of alcohol the guy had. The conductor backed down and the guy sat down between the door and my son and when my son got up to move the guy flashed his gun and told my son to sit down and not move. My son texted us discreetly and told us what was happening and to not call his phone and call 911. When we did that, they told us there wasn't anything they could do unless the guy pulled the gun out and used it... Unless he pulled it out and shot someone, then they could respond? Are you kidding me??? Luckily they guy eventually got off at the stop before my son's, so he was okay in the end, but he was terrified during the experience. We ordered the Byrna two days later and I've been teaching my son how to use it and how to get a tight shot placement. Maybe if he'd had one with him at the time, he might have been able to quietly get it out of his backpack and get out of the situation sooner, but I was proud of him for not panicking and keeping a clear head despite being terrified at the time. I'll be finishing the Chemical Agent Certification exam from Byrna by the end of the month so I can purchase the Pepperballs and Max rounds for personal and home protection.

Love my byrna sd, and a less lethal weapon in a selfdefense scene.

I've got one to bridge the gap between my pepper spray and my firearms. I'd feel a lot safer using this against a dog attacking my child, and if someone breaks in, I can mag dump pepperballs into the wall before we head to the master bedroom and get behind a rifle. A few things: 1) That first trigger pull breaks the CO2 seal. Since it also pulls the barrel over the round, rubber ammo makes for harder pulls. I'd suggest just using pepperballs or hard nylon/plastic for carry ammo. Also, that first shot is a little slower for some reason, keep that in mind if you need to break pepper on someone at a distance or wearing winter clothing. You can get around this by safeing the weapon and pulling the trigger, then going off safe to fire. Takes some more thinking though, so practice. 2) The retainer lever at the top of the mags will dump rounds if you bump it, so carry loaded mags in a rigid pouch or get a cover for them. They're about the size of a Glock 17/22 mag. 3) There are two products that allow you to use more commonly available 12 gram CO2 cartridges-- the Byrna Boost, and the Mercy Less-Lethal extension. The Mercy is pricey at $80 but hailed as the better of the two. It is definitely the more minimalist one. 4) The gun is pretty big, like a Glock 21-- but the other one I have, the Umarex T4E HDP, is as big as my Glock 34, so it stays at home. Invest in a holster. 5) Know your laws and your police. CCW is rare in my county, so I got a brightly-colored one in case any cops hallen to be around when I use it. Sure, 9mm may get teased as wimpy, but I still don't want to catch one. 6) The first stage of the trigger pull is a long draw, and fat or gloved fingers will have trouble getting in there. Good luck and I hope you don't need to fire yours other than for practice!

Hello Jay! There is an adapter that you can purchase for the SD that will make it into an SDXL! Check out the Byrna Boost on our website.

I understand that the SD XL also has an extended barrel. The adapter doesn’t have an air tight barrel extension that would aid in increased projectile velocity. Might be splitting hairs but it’s my understanding that there is a slight difference.
