Hi there my question is you said that you mix the liquitex whit alclad? Or you put first the liquitex and top of that alclad??

I thought you had copied it from someone else but you were the one who figured it out, so I came here to like and subscribe :) though I don't think I can find if you mixed that whole bottle with 6/3 or a specific amount of liquitex Also can't find the brand or the same looking box here in The Netherlands, not on Amazon or eBay etc. I hope some other brand can do well :\

Wait. What's the exact formula? You keep mentioning the clear varnish and the food color, but you keep holding up the alclad. Are you adding varnish and food color to the alclad or no?

I wonder if this technique would work on top of silver rub and buff
@gordontarpley

It might but rub n buff is wax based and tends to repel the paints. There may be a technique to overcome that but I'm not sure.

Great technique!... but are you sure the ratios are right? Or did you do lots of coats? I bought the same varnish and McCormick colours (had to import to UK) and the colour is so faint it basically still looks silver except for where I accidentally pooled a bit which looks gold. Had to do 3 coats so far and it's only just starting to look a bit gold. Good news is it hasn't hazed with the extra coats.

Hey, I've been watching your videos and I am wondering if you ever applied clear coat to your alclad? If so how does it affect the reflectivity?

As far as i know, the varnish acts as a clear coat, protective layer. Although one would assume that a high gloss clear enamel would make the shine that much stronger

Hey Gordon, at 4:11, what's the spray chrome you're using now? Not alclad anymore? Are you still using the liquitex over the new spray chrome? Thanks! EDIT, never mind, I see you're using a silver nitrate system now.

Do you premix one ounce of Varnish, Alclad, and the mixture of food colorings? And that is all brushed on as one single coat?

Thanks Gordon! I'm in the middle of putting Alclad on my suit right now, so this works out perfect for me. My mind is blown by the fact that you're using food coloring, I never would have guessed! I bought some automotive clear coat and gold tint, so I'm probably going to try that too, but now I may just follow your technique for the first version. Thanks again, this is great!

Ok so has anyone added yellow food coloring directly to the initial alclad chrome paint that is sprayed on?!? Why wouldn’t this work? I imagine it’d lightly tint the chrome paint right?
@gordontarpley

It'll ruin the alclad. Alclad is solvent based. Adding water-based food coloring doesn't play nice.

Can I get a bit more detail on this method? Just about to strip my helmet as I've ruined it trying this :( How many coats did you do? And how thin? And did you let each layer of varnish cure? My first coat went on fine but was barely lifted past silver in colour, coat two smeared coat one and ruined the helmet. Bathing it in thinners back to fiberglass. Particularly guttet as I almost kept the helmet silver as it was such a perfect mirror (in fact it was hard to get varnish to stick it was so shiny).

Actually not as disastrous as I thought, the varnish peeled off like rubber with the alclad stuck to the back! Just a re-polish of my gloss and fresh alclad needed. Will keep it silver until I find a workable tint. Might try spraying a water/varnish/colour mix. Have you ever tried tinting the alclad itself with food colouring in the airbrush? Then Just brushing over with clear varnish and avoiding streaky colour?

I had the same problem over my alclad. Very hard to get the liquitex to stick and not bead up on the surface. Once it does stick it levels beautifully... but sadly it also pools and runs if too thick, and you get patchy colour brush strokes if too thin. I'm now convinced I need to get the colour prayed on somehow, possibly with clear brushed varnish over the top. Disappearing into my shed with an airbrush and food colouring next week to see if I can mist the colour on and over varnish.

This video helped me figure out how to tint alclad. But I wish you showed a video on how to brush, kind of annoying you don't even show it on a single video. I was repainting a Hasbro Infinity Gauntlet so my color mix was a little darker than C3P0, but I used airbrush with satisfying results. I just got a hazy tack coat on there let it dry for about 15-20 then applied a single gloss coat and I like how it came out. The brushing gave gloopy results. Thanks for the tips.
