Chanshal Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.800m (12,467ft) above the sea level, located in the Shimla district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. To reach the summit you will be driving on some of the narrowest roads you have ever on, barely wide enough for one car at some stretches.
The road to the summit is gravel, rocky, tippy and bumpy at times. It links the small town of Rohru and the villages of Dodra and Kwar. Avoid driving in this area if unpaved mountain roads aren't your strong point.
The road is steep and tough to drive. 4x4 recommended. Stay away if you're scared of heights. Expect a trail pretty steep (up to 12%) with hairpin turns. Wet conditions may make for tough driving along the muddy road. The ascent is quite steep and for most part, the road is a completely broken dirt trail; with a lot of slush and lose rocks.
This cliff road remains open from May to October and is covered with snow for the rest of the year. There are many excellent photo opportunities. Don't forget your camera with lots of film/memory, fully charged batteries and an empty memory card! The summit offers good views of the scenic beauty of the Himalayas.
Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. Weather around Chanshal Pass remains cold and windy throughout the year. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. It’s the highest peak of the Shimla district. The climb is simply terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. Most people feel altitude sickness at around 2,500-2,800 meters. Near the pass, oxygen is in short supply.
