In this video a big crush ❤ for us, the former house of César Manrique became his foundation.
The César Manrique Foundation is installed in the singular and spectacular house that César Manrique. Inhabited by the artist for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988, it is the house in which he lived the longest. It was built in the middle of a lava flow caused by the great eruptions that the island experienced between 1730 and 1736. This construction, which extends over 3,000 square meters in a 3 ha property, is characterized by the dialogue between the building and nature thanks to the fusion between the volcano and the architecture in a relationship of mutual respect.
The upper floor is inspired by the traditional architecture of Lanzarote to which the artist has incorporated functional elements of modern design (large windows, generous spaces, overhead lighting, etc.). At the lower level, Manrique took advantage of the existence of five natural volcanic bubbles connected through tunnels dug in the lava. They constitute a habitable place which is as surprising as it is singular as an intervention on the natural space. You can also visit the swimming pool, the small dance floor, the oven, the barbecue…
Visiting this house, built on a sea of lava, is an exceptional experience.
Cesar Manrique:
César Manrique (1919-1992) was born in Arrecife, an island of Lanzarote which is forever marked by his artistic trajectory.
In the mid-sixties, when he moved to Lanzarote, César Manrique promoted on the island a series of artistic projects of a spatial and landscape nature, unpublished at the time, in which he materialized his plastic and ethical thought. It is a set of actions and interventions aimed at enhancing the landscape and the natural assets of the island, which will configure its new face and its international projection and which are part of the landscape transformation and the adaptation of Lanzarote to the tourism economy.
This is how he elaborates a new set of aesthetic ideas which he calls art-nature/nature-art, in which he integrates different artistic manifestations, which he materializes in his landscape works, which constitute a singular example of public art in Spain.
