I didn’t vote for her, and I’m a proud Democrat. But people don’t give her enough credit as a public speaker. This is by far the best convention speeches by a running mate from either party ever delivered. My degree is in communications and I worked for a few years out of college as a speech writer and coach, and anyone will tell you that the hardest style of public speaking to accomplish, yet is the most persuasive, is conversational style. Palin nails it. She makes it look effortless up there, as if she is just talking to a few of her friends at a school fundraiser, or to your coworkers about an important work place issue. So many people, not just politicians, deliver speeches like robots; they sound very mechanical and stiff. People know a speech is written, however public speaking isn’t merely just reading the words out loud that are on the paper, it is about conveying what those words mean through your tone of voice and infliction, as well as facial expression and hand gestures. Look at Trump for example: his followers love him when he does the non-scripted hour long rants at his rallies. But watching him delivered prepared remarks is cringeworthy. What Palin also does best, is adding extemporaneous moments to her speech to add humor, or convey her sincerity. The “hockey mom and a pit bull” is a perfect example. Imagine if that was scripted? It would have been so awkward and forced. What many people don’t know is that she has used that line many times prior to this speech, so she knew she could throw it in there whenever she wanted because she had practiced it before. Speech coaches will always say to novice Public speakers “stick to the script, and follow the rules, until you become good enough to break them.” Palin is a pro-public speaker and because of that she is able to go off script, and make it look effortless and relaxed. Surprisingly, Biden is really good at doing these “asides” where he speaks to the audience directly, throwing in some random story about his upbringing, or some funny story about some random politician. But, since he has never been a great public speaker, you can always tell that he is forcing the speech and there is very little passion. So when he does go off script, it stands in stark contrast to his prepared remarks. Anyways, the reason I am even watching this video is because I teach advanced public speaking & forensics at a local community college and I am showing clips from pro-public speakers, and Palin is one of the speeches I have students study. Another political speech worth watching is Gov. Anne Richard’s Democratic Convention speech. She was another woman was an A+ speaker.

Such a shame, she had so much raw political talent. Palin was never able to recover from what the 08 race did to her image; not to mention her missteps afterwards made matters worse for her. She could have been a real force in the GOP rather than the caricature that she ultimately became. So much talent gone to waste, so sad. For the GOP, the outcome of Palin's political demise resulted in a loss of political talent that was and is so desperately needed in the party.

Rewatching this b/c I just rewatched HBO’s Game Change movie about her. I remember thinking at the time how much she nailed this speech. McCain’s political team’s decision to not go out in public and respond to the avalanche of attacks from the media was genius. 1: Everybody wanted to tune in to see what she’d say and how she’d respond; & 2: the audience in that arena was overflowing with adoration b/c it was their first chance to defend her and support her. As a result, with a good delivery she was able to maximize the impact of all of the zingers and applause lines. In my opinion she was “over-handled” by the McCain team post-convention speech in trying to polish her up for the Washington media punditry. They should have known she’d never get a fair shake from them, and just tell them to take a hike. Force them to only report on her speeches from the stump.

Further - as you watch it - keep in mind the OBJECTIVE of the speech. Back then, NOBODY knew Sarah Palin ("Sarah who?") Many were upset that McCain nominated a woman. So, in one speech, she had to 1) introduce herself to the entire world 2) appeal to both men and women (the toughest critics of all) and 3) come across as strong and capable. She did all three. Further, she was the FIRST in that campaign to attack Obama - which electrified the audience. And she was FUNNY.

There legal bills exceeded $500,000 and they were taking time away from Palin's job as governor. In the interest of expediency, Palin resigned and turned over the governorship to her attorney general. Of course, as soon as Palin resigned, the radicals on the left started calling her a "quitter," and the brainwashing of drones like you and Julian began. Now, read this clearly ... when she ran for governor, she ran on a platform to eliminate the "good old boy" network of REPUBLICAN establishment types ... and she did exactly that. The first thing she did was to sell the governor's private corporate jet. Then she negotiated with the oil companies ... and as result, instead of the entrenched politicians and bureaucrats getting kickbacks from the oil companies, each Alaskan citizen gets a yearly royalty check from these same oil companies. So Jacob, you can either educate yourself to the reality of the situation, or you can continue making a fool of yourself on the Internet. Your choice. Which will it be?

@EickhorstPokerPro You must have left every movie house (theatre) you've ever bought a ticket to over the past 20 years, right? The first 17 mins? give me a break! One of her best lines is, "I guess being the Mayor of Alaska is like a community organizer, except you have actual responsibilities." that's 14:58 into the speech, and you were probably seething......come on, be honest! it was a great line and a great speech and you listened to all of it, right? tell the truth!

@bdiab Did I say I preferred her as a candidate? I merely pointed out that she is far from out of the picture as the Dems would like to paint her. Obama is running dead even with "an unamed Republican" according to Gallup. As for the names being tossed about, Cain looks promising. My unasnwered question for Cain is his foreign policy. The election isn't tomorrow, when the campaigning starts and Obamas non record starts seeing scrutiny, his popularity is likely to see a major drop off.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Shes halfway through her speech before she mentions anything about gov. When she does she has the insight and vocab of an 8th grader. There really should be some kind of intellectual qualification to run for office in the white house. She should be up there proving to what makes her a worthy candidate. But instead, since she has no value as a politician and knows it, she attempts to glamorize her running mate and bash her opponent. Epic FAIL!

@Nushika9 Didn't you tell me to leave you alone? People who go on the web all the time and talk to people who agree with their own views start to think everybody feels the same way they do. Obama's approval numbers are only slightly lower than they were when he was elected...and that's without campaigning. Remember, a mid term election is an election decided by the base. A Presidential election is everybody. A noisy, but small minority like the tea party doesn't speak for anybody but itself.

@Nushika9 Believe me, any Conservative who is supporting Palin may as well go vote for Obama themselves. You don't have to wait to see, it's already happening. Trust me, people who are in the middle, the people on the fence who really decide elections, HATE Sarah Palin...and more and more every time she says something unintelligent...more every day, in other words. It's very different winning a national election than winning local ones. I hate to say it, but Obama's will win easily in 2012.

On a website created to attack Sen. Ted Stevens, the Alaskan Democratic Party indicates that it was Palin who stopped the Bridge: Gov. Palin recently cancelled the Gravina Island Bridge near Ketchikan that would have connected the Alaska mainland with Gravina Island (population: 50). Thus, until Palin became the Republican candidate for Vice President, no one seemed to question that she was the principle force stopping funding for the "Bridge to Nowhere."

@payazaiskool Hey, we all make mistakes. It's was hard to see through all the garbage during that election (and even today) when the media has an agenda. I just suggest that everyone do their own research on Sarah Palin. There has never been another politician like her in our lifetime. She is a PROVEN reformer. When you do your research, you'll realize that. I don't like any politicians except for her. I've followed her career for years and I'm still impressed with her character.

She doesn't think like you do? Is that what you mean by airhead? That's the problem these days when someone disagree's with another point of view they call them names. She ran one of biggest States in the union and was a mayor of her home town. That's better then anything thats on Obama's resume. At least give some credit for that. I don't think that Obama is an Airhead. He just got into the wrong career! We need a Pesident who brings this country together. Obama doesn't do this.

@DsTaR151 If Obama really cared for America , he would resign . He is doing no one a favor . It takes creativity to have lower Poll numbers than Bush. I would say he is the Only American President to do that , but it is unclear if he is from America or Kenya. When he applied for College scholarships he denounced his Amercian citizenship and claimed to be from Kenya. All documented.

While it is true , many People , including some Republicans would not vote for Sarah Palin , Most polls indicate she can beat Obama if the election were held today. Of course that is like Reagan beating Carter - No great Feat except Reagan was a Great President. I will vote for her . Many will not agree with me but she would make a Great President. My opinion. I would vote almost anyone over the shmuck we call BO

If we Republicans can't do anybody than this clown and quitter we will lose again and bigger than we did last time. Serious Republicans want a serious candidate like Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney? Candidates who can get in the trenches, debate and win! Candidates who go on Sunday Morning programs and discuss issues in detail with in-depth analysis. What would Republicans like Eisenhower and Reagan say about this broad. lolololol...

@bs17 Public speeches off a teleprompter and "press conferences" with pre-approved questions are one thing. Facing a probing interview is something altogether different. He's been subjected to scrutiny, all right, but not because he's had the courage of facing aggressive lines of questioning. FoxNews is the only outlet that has pressed him on the issues, much UNLIKE the fawning minions who cuddle at his feet from CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Then why hasn't cutting taxes been working for the past 8 years? Why didn't it work during Reagan's term? When you cut taxes you raise taxes indirecty. Education is a divine right, it can't be a business. We have also been under-supplying the whole thing for decades Your battle strategy could work but with a few problems, its a global issue, its killing our economy, its inefficient. Its what we have been doing

@dsmith6289 I hear ya.... 30k in fed and state? Holy shit! Do you know that when reagan entered office the corp tax rate was at 35% and when he left it was 7%.. What really is fair? How do we support 2 wars and yet cut taxes, were is the common sense I ask? How about protecting our industry and keeping our taxes modest? Is that even possible? Perhaps if we had a govt that was not so influenced by lobbyist we could achieve a common sense approach.

Basically, what your saying is no matter what Palin does, you will figure out an excuse to approve of it. She didn't resign for the big money from the book? So, is it just a coincidence she came out with that book a couple months after resigning??? C'mon now! She was HOT now, and she may not have been this hot when her term ended. If your gonna admire her, do it for the right reason: The ability to know when to grab the dough.

Listen guys, I'm all for healthy debate in this country, and I just wish that the Repubs would put someone out there who actually can have a stirring, intelligent debate (b/c I agree with some of the conservative platform ideas). But look at what is out there now in terms of conservative thinkers: Rush, Hannity, Coulter,GLEN BECK, Maulkin (oh my), Bauchman, Palin... I mean, it's a disgrace to democracy, and any real thinker has to admit that. These people are haters and opportunists.

I can't disagree with you more: I DO find Palin fascinating and appealing, but voters have NOT fallen in love with her. She has appealed only to the far right since the election, and would lose overwhelmingly to Obama in 2012, there is just no denying that. I think she was treated poorly and unfairly in the race, but a lot of it was of her own doing; some of the answers she has given in interviews, you just can't make that shit up!

RosalitaBU8: "PALIN/JINDAL 2012", Oh please, oh please let that happen. As a progressive, that would be absolutely wonderful for our side. Listen, Obama has been disappointing in terms of his ability to get things done fast, but to put his public speaking skills/intelligence in competition with Palin's would truly do a horrible injustice to not only the Republican party, but also to a healthy democratic debate as a whole. I find her fascinating, and feel sorry she's been treated badly, but..

What you are saying is "lets play the game so long as I make the rules." I remember you posting something similar. You asked again and again what Obamas accomplishments were. So I did your homework and gave you a list of many bills he was involved in during his very short stay in Congress. But apparently because the impressive list didn't support your case you just returned to mindless bantering. And now you want me to do MORE of your homework? LOL! palin game rules? yabetcha!

Hey, Moore finished up ANOTHER good movie! Seen it yet? How about his earlier ones? Good stuff if you aren't a regressive "republicon". Good thing the critics know so much more about the Nobel Peace Prize than those that are on the Nobel Committees. How would the prizes ever get awarded without their valuable contribution? Yep, Kissinger was one exception. But most will admit the party of NO have NOT been the party of peace. Even in this country we'd be pretty backwards if the "republicons" had their way. Women and blacks wouldn't be voting or would have been delayed much later. And what of civil rights? The list goes on and on. The party of NO means NO PROGRESS. An election in Sweden? What tha? That price is world renowned no matter where its host country is. Find another excuse. That one sucks.

Welfare loving? That's about as clueless as your support for palin. What is Africa palin? A bachelor's degree? Very impressive. Heres a palin quote. "I think on a national level your Department of Law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out." Heck with the constitution. In a way I love her. When the "republicon" ship was sinking, McCain they them an anchor. Her name was palin. Thank you McCrazy!

Palin... Having won the Miss Wasilla pageant, she finished third in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant, receiving the "Miss Congeniality" award and a college scholarship. After attending four different colleges over nine semesters spanning five academic years, she received a B.S. in communications with an emphasis in journalism from the University of Idaho in May 1987. Yea, she's qualifed! Have a look at Obma's education. No, he's no beauty queen, and he's no idiot.

Then I guess u can say Obama mocks small-town ppl? She didn't mock community organizers. She was just smacking down Obama who says she has no experience bc she's a small-town mayor. She said, 'A small-town mayor is sorta like a community organizer, but w/ actual responsibilities' bc she had to sign budgets/staff proper personnel/sign city charter rules/etc. As a Christian you're offended by her? As a Buddhist, I love her!
