CORRECTION: In regards to the extra storage bin in the cargo area behind the driver, I was incorrect in saying that the bin went away in 1986 because of the ABS module. The bin actually STAYED as there was still room above the module for the bin...UNTIL 1992, when the ASR traction control system was added to the mix and took up the rest of the space in that bin. So 1984-1992 cars had the extra bin behind the driver's seat, 1992-1996 did not. Thank you to the viewers who brought this up to my attention!

I own a C4 1989 Roadster and there are a few interesting 'quirks' of the manual convertible top like the rear deck lid release (in 3 places) and the pull handle release under the lid. Another strange thing is the way the the wires that position the top liner can flop into the lid closure lip unless you manually attend to each side before you fold the top in and close lid. It's also a good idea to fold a towel into the plastic window to keep it from being scratched by a center wire assembly that can scratch it with the top stored. I have had the car for 32 years and 197,000 miles and still love my one owner all original 1989 Vette!

One quirk you forgot is the interior lighting! I also have a '96 LT4 CE and I was blown away the first time I played with the interior lights at night. The orange glow from the buttons, dials, and ambient lighting is awesome, but I was amazed when I pushed the dimmer switch all the way up and suddenly the entire cabin was lit from about 5 different light sources including that cool and quirky map light on the underside of the mirror.

Hi Eric/Gary- I hit up a few Corvette FB groups, heard back from dozens of owners of all the different model years to double check this. It appears that they do all, indeed, flop forward six inches or so. Seats are not broken. You'll only notice this if you brake hard (not something most people would be doing often), or if you gently push the top forward with your hand. Try it out and see!
@ericrosen6626
3 жыл бұрын
@@RetroCarsForever What I was thinking was that maybe I never noticed it during hard braking as generally the passenger seat is out of my field of view when I'm driving. So yesterday, I found myself headed toward a red light going about 45-50 MPH and no other cars near me, so figured I'd give stomping on the brakes a try (while paying some attention to the passenger seat) and it didn't move at all. The seat does move the few inches if I push it by hand (with fairly little effort), so I guess not sure why it doesn't move with hard braking.

Great video, as usual, I have to thank you for showing the seat bottom removal! (I kinda think you showed it in your video on your replacement of the power seat motor situation you had but I clearly didn't take proper note of it.) I also thought you mentioned the C4 Spare Tire Situation in one of your earlier videos or comment streams, both, the location and how to remove the tire or the optional STD (lol) Spare Tire Delete opt. Likewise, I thought you mentioned in a vid or stream, the "Dome Light" quirk(s), located in rearview mirror and that there's an ambient light along with them that points down onto the shifter area while the key in the on position (which of course, means while the car is being driven also) this light freaked me out the first time I drove my C4, "How the hell do I shut this light off and why didn't the seller mention it to me?!" LOL -The extra/outer "SCV" volume control knob quirk where the volume is calibrated to the rpms of the car so-to-speak, ergo Speed Controlled Volume=SCV. (You could describe it better than I). -Battery replacement (DRAG!) lol this is truly a quirk I have looked at with my angry face a few times lol -Where to check water/coolant level, top off, or fill your "Radiator" - a strange ass quirk - again, blame it on the Reverse Flow. oh and btw, my C4 didn't come equipped with a rear hatch area cover (sobbing), the PO said he was told not all C4 coupes came with them but I thought maybe it was just removed... need to do a little research I guess. Thanks again Bradman!

My '94 does not have the key release button. Tilting the seat is done by moving the seat button side to side... no manual. ASR is funky on mine so I always turn it off. The engine surges when on cruise if I have the ASR on and sometimes I feel little ticks like it is trying out the brakes. New sensors might fix that but turning the ASR off works for now. To the new folks turning ASR off is dangerous as you can spin tires at speed if the road is wet... meaning it can go round and round then crash. Just be careful with the throttle and there are no problems. The wipers just suck. They can blow right off the windshield if not adjusted properly... videos that show how to do that out there. That targa top is untouchable if the car sat outside in the sun. I put a pair of jersey gloves in the car just for that. Front and back tires are not the same size and are not supposed to be the same size.. wider in back. You have to remove a side panel to change the battery (change the cable ends while you are at it.. I went brass). If the hold down bolt is stuck just cut it with a dremel... you can buy new faster than fight with it. The LT1 runs HOT... fan comes on at 230 degrees so don't panic. Pushing the AC button switches the fan on at any temp! If the computer shuts the engine down limp mode is enabled by pushing the gas pedal all the way down while starting it. I had a bad sensor and paid two tow bills before remembering limp mode... flat bed tow only... straps go over the tires to secure the car. 17.8 mpg combo town/highway/full throttle passing. ONLY synthetic oil... two stage pump designed for synthetic and regular oil thins out in a hot motor like the LT1. Only premium gas... 10.5 to 1 compression ratio. Mine seems to handle and like ethanol blend (10%). Daily drive mine in good weather. Got caught in a significant storm... 30mph top speed but it did not drown. Walmart batteries work fine... another vid the guy bought a $350 fancy battery. Check the spare tire bolt once a year to make sure it did not work loose. Forget changing the tire... if you have a flat call a tow. If some idiot lets the air out use an air tank to reinflate the tire as it needs that sudden burst of air to reseal. There are people that will be butthurt because you have an old chevy and they don't.

Great quirks and tips! One small correction- Not EVERY C4 has staggered tire sizes. For example, my 1996 Z51 has wider front tires than most, they are the same size as the rears. And I should've mentioned in the video that the key release mechanism is only on manual cars, not automatics.

On the temp gauge, that wasn't a quirk, it was a defect. It affected all GM vehicles too, not just Corvette. Basically, GM used poorly calibrated gauges in their vehicles which resulted in higher than actual temp readings. On some model/makes it was particularly bad. For example on Saturn vehicles, the gauge would bury itself into the red, then return to 3/4 once the thermostat cycled. This resulted in numerous complaints and caused GM to release a bulletin explaining that it was normal. Sadly all this did was setup owners for future failure because you essentially told customers to ignore the temp gauge. One of the most critical gauges in a vehicle. 🤦♂️ Eventually, GM would move on to "simulated gauges" in the late 90's. On these cars, the gauge is an average reading. Not real time. Which is also bad, because if your engine is running hotter than normal, you will be none the wiser as the needle barely moves because it's displaying an average temp. Another thing GM would eventually due is add a "check gauges" light. This was to entice owners to observe their gauges more closely because something was awry. After almost a decade of inconsistent gauges, owners had become desensitized and needed a reminder. 😂
@RetroCarsForever
Жыл бұрын
Wow! Interesting info. Amazing that something seemingly as simple as gauges got so goofed up by GM at the time! Does the digital reading of the C4's temp gauge have the same issue?

@@RetroCarsForever The digital readings are accurate and live. The C4 used live gauges which display actual temperature like mechanical gauges do. Hey Brad, thanks for confirming the “whirring” of the ZF-6 in Neutral as being normal. Bought my ‘96 sight-unseen from Texas and the first time I noticed that sound, especially going away with the the clutch in, I said “oh MAN, that can’t be good.” Love your C4 content, your videos were influential to me buying a C4 and selling my C3 shortly thereafter. Keep up the great videos. Take care!

Thanks so much! I had a similar feeling after getting mine, but looking it up, found the sound was totally normal. Whew!

so how's it going from a C3 to a C4? (and, did you *want* to keep your C3 or couldn't keep both cars?)

These cars a cool but get this.. Starting in 92 the lt1 put out 300hp... The acceleration times are better than by 69 GTO!!! 0 to 60 in 5.0 or 5.2 dending on tranny .. 13.7 quarter is not bad either..

Oh yeah, the LT1s/LT4s are legit fast! Top speed of nearly 170 mph as well.
