Slightly cleaner/easier method. Do what you say about grinding/drilling the rivets on the top (backplate of ball joint). Get ball joint off. Grind the rivets flush to both sides of the a-arm. Youll notice the bottom has a larger diameter. This is because the bottom of the rivets is tapered. Take a center punch and hammer, get the a-arm on a solid surface and hammer down on the smaller diameter end (NOT the tapered end of the rivets). I've done numerous this way and provides the best results. Its extremely hard to keep a drill centered on the rivets; it will inevitably walk and start chewing into the aluminum of the a-arm.

Meaning drive them out from the top to the bottom?

Talk about doing things the hard way! Use a 4 1/2" angle grinder and you'll go right through those rivets in a few seconds.

When I took my front wheel bearings off the spindle I noticed there was some thin oil in there, still really clean it kinda looked like motor oil, I didn't know if I needed to oil the inside again with the new bearings, do I need to oil them?

Use a magnet to pick up the shavings on top before you start hammering on things, no brainer!

What is torque specifications for the bolts (and nuts) attaching the upper ball joint? I'm very confused about torque specifications on those bolts. How many Ft-lbs did you use? In Haynes Manual it says: "Tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the new balljoint instruction sheet". Mine doesn't have any instruction sheet. I found statement on one forum "The instructions supplied with my MOOG upper ball joints stated 12-14 ft.-lbs for the bolts and nuts." My suspension kit is not MOOG, it is OCPTY - New 8-Piece fit for 1995-2005 for Chevrolet Cavalier - 2 Front Lower Ball Joint 2 Sway Bar 2 Outer 2 Inner Tie Rod End. In one film (but it was a Chevy truck) the author applied 50 Ft-lbs. My car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier, just one control arm. Thank you for the informative film.

I was wondering: Could the steel rivets be pressed out with the ball joint press? Hmmm...
@sly59vette

Perhaps. This car drove in many Iowa winters to the salt fused the rivets to the a-arm.

Dave: How did it ride after the installation?

Fine. This was more preventative since my boots were torn. My ball joints were not that bad.

Good point! I also replaced by brake lines, so I wasn't too concerned.

It would have been better to driller the rivets, out why the ball joint was still in place...

Perhaps. I wasn't certain how well the holes would align with my replacement ball joint. In the picture, you can see that my replacement ball joint wasn't a perfect fit with the OEM.
