Clearly I fell off the wagon a bit with this project since this one took me closer to 6 weeks rather than the 2 I’m aiming for, but I think I need to allow myself a bit of grace since I’m not a full-time composer :)
I’m dedicating this partial arrangement of “Go the Distance” from Hercules to my friend Lucia! Before we started our internships we got to see the Hercules stage musical put on by The Public in Central Park. Jelani Alladin played Hercules (and Roger Bart - the original singer of Go the Distance - played Hades! Patrick Page took a picture with him and it was super cute) and in an interview he said, “We have a 10-word bio in the program because there are so many people in the show. The 10 words I wrote are, ‘This is for all those whose shoulders I stand on.’ When I sing ‘Go the Distance,’ I think about all of the black men who have been enslaved, incarcerated, assassinated-I think about them. There is a hero inside of all of them. It’s the most empowering moment I’ve ever had onstage.”
The original song is just so beautiful and I think the lyrics speak to everyone. I don’t believe in perfect art, or perfection in general, but there’s a part of me that thinks a perfect arrangement of this song must exist somewhere - we just haven’t found it yet. I think BYU Vocal Point gets the closest.
All that being said, I was really excited to start writing this one - it’s been on my docket since at least high school - and I still think I could have made this go in a lot of different directions, especially keeping the very beginning more intimate. For maybe the first time, I think multiple options could work rather than just thinking one is “right”. However, I also struggled and procrastinated and lost motivation with this at quite a few times, too - part of why it took 6 weeks for about 2.5 minutes of music. I was holding off on posting it because I wanted to finish the bridge and last chorus but I realized at yet another 4am that it ended up kind of just being reflections of some other not-so-great arrangements I found sheet music for; it stopped feeling like my own voice or style, if that makes sense. Hopefully I can revisit this at some point, but I also feel like I say that about everything I write, sooooo…..
I made notes to myself throughout, mostly using color throughout the score, but they didn’t show up when I exported the video: it was mostly things like chord voicings (like those marimba rolls in the first chorus), octaves, runs - lots of little things. I ended up trying to model at least the marimba parts off of our ballad at Crown in 2018, but…might be a bit ambitious, to say the least. I also discovered that Sibelius’ sound files for the glockenspiel is slightly out of tune from their orchestral bells, and the chimes as well as certain crotale notes are out of tune.
okay woo! yeah!
