I somehow stumbled upon this game many-many years after it's release (in about 2007) and I was surprised how clever this was. I played many c64 games when I was a kid but never played this. As an adult I really enjoyed it, it's really well made and was really good fun.

i like how most levels were based on a scene in the movie. that was clever how they used the organ part. and there was a giant squid but they didn't use the scene in the final movie

I played this game a ton as a kid. My copy was messed up, though. The last level would always glitch out on the graphics and so it was really hard to figure out what was where, but I actually did manage to beat it one time. I was proud to be a Goonie for having made it through that mess! My favorite levels were the Octopus and the Organ. It's disappointing just how short they were, though. Oh well, great memories with this one.

I still remember some of the hints in the instruction booklet. "Mama Fratelli is dirty and mean, money will get you off her scheme. Quence the embers run, run, run, then you'll find your task is done". It was cool they put the solutions in the manual.

I was 2 levels short of the ending then. Thanks for that. I never could get beyond that damn skull screen, mostly due to the bats on the previous level.
@zaphod77
3 жыл бұрын
The skull screen is the first really nasty one, because of that damn bird's randomness with where it enters. You should die once at most on the bowling ball level if you are careful, cuz the bats won't get released a second time unless you are careless. The organ one is brutal as well, because the water drops are ALSO random, and you can easily get hosed if you aren't EXTREMELY careful. the octopus isn't THAT bad when you know what to do, but it's still challenging, but the last screen is 100% safe.

It's the first time I watched this game. I think one of my friends had it - but he didn't like it. Now I'm perplexed how complicated and well thought it was. And some scenes of it remind me of "Another World" by Eric Chahi and - yes - even "Limbo" (the floating box).

Am I wrong or did more games early on seem to employ more problem solving in them as opposed to gaming as the industry progress?
@soylentgreenb

Games have been vastly dumbed down and homogenized on the whole. There are multiple reasons for this. Puzzle games run on any hardware; they’re not graphically intensive; computers tended to have more of them and consoles more immediate, arcadey games. Memory constraints meant the game could not hold your hand; you had to write things down and make maps because the game would not do it for you. Games were made by small groups of people and they made the games they wanted to play. Memory constraints meant that games could not be long; therefor they had to be difficult. AAA is a disaster today; but indie games retain the 90’s spirit of experimentation; mechanical complexity and difficulty. 90% of everything was always shit, but there were amazing things in there; games that uniquely appealed to you but don’t necessarily have mass market appeal, because if you throw enough shit at a wall some of it will stick. That long tail can only be served by small studios that don’t need $500 million back on their investment because the game was made by 12 people. That’s the long tail concept; most people are in that long tail and are very underserved by AAA. AAA is short, easy, commoditized, mediocre games that you just consume like a movie and forget about.
