Cab Calloway is a genius! Michael Jackson bit from him with his Billie Jean video, where the sidewalk lights up...Cab did it first. You should react to a Cab video where he uses a tenement building as an orchestra pit! Cab is in front of the tenement building directing his band, stationed in the windows, playing their instruments! It's an amazing scene. Cab was not only a maestro, he was a singer, choreographer, dancer, he even acted! A pure 20th Century Renaissance Man!!!

Minnie is called 'poor Min' because she was poor, dancing for money, but dreamt about Count Basie keeping her in the lap of luxury. The dream of ridiculous wealth that ain't gonna happen for her gets Cab Calloway to feel badly for her and he repeats it quite soulfully with the closing bars of the song.

I had the privilege of seeing Cab live in 1984 just before I turned 16. On a show with the Count Basie Orchestra - Count had left the tour due to illness, and Cab was brought in to make a show of it. The man was 77 years old, in phenomally good voice, and tore that stage up! He did an uptempo, almost rock arrangement of this song and threw in a Micheal Jackson-style honest-to-god moonwalk toward the end -the crowd absolutely ate it up!🤩🤯 Only regret is that I never got to witness Count Basie himself leading the proceedings - he passed away a few weeks later. I know he’d have been delighted with the whole thing.

1980 Blues Brothers... In the 70s a lot of young people were rediscovering old 1930s blues and jazz records and playing them. A lot. We would seek out concerts of older blues performers and attend them. So this was a thing that was going on. Akroyd and Belushi are a little older than I am, but generally from a similar subculture. So it's not surprising that they really were into this. Many young people were. That's why the characters were so popular. We all were familiar with Cab Calloway. We also had records of jazz musicians from the 30s that we played regularly at our parties.

Hey Jamel! This is a sanitized version of "Minnie the Moocher". If you go back in time to the early 1930's, the audio and video recorded versions of Cab Calloway performing this song were longer, and had references to drinking and drugs. This was before so-called blue laws were passed, forcing movie studios and recording artists to be *clean* for "respectable" audiences.

Mr.Calloway coined many words and phrases, including “hep” and actually wrote The Dictionary of Slang back around the 30’s. He was taught by an opera teacher which is why his diction is so wonderful. Had the privilege of meeting him along with his wife and one of his daughters at the Fairmont in SF. They were all extremely gracious. I had brought a newspaper clipping with me reviewing his show at the hotel for him to autograph just in case the opportunity presented itself, and it did.
