Great video, thanks. Nice view of The Bedford PH at the beginning, there on the left. One of my watering holes back in the 80s, when I lived not far away.

We nearly had a Vulcan bomber crash on the tracks at the far end on Petts Woos Station one summer Saturday in 66. The 2-mile approach for Biggin Hill crosses there, our garden backed onto the tracks. You remember the opening shot of Star Wars? Just like that, the nose pitot, then the cone, and the wings, at about 50'. And then it decided it needed more height, so put the burners on. I was carried the 50' of the garden in about a second, across a rose bed and flattened against the house. Surprised but unhurt.

In the early 70s I sometimes did timings for tampers. Because they were so small and light they couldn't be relied on to opearate track circuits so had to stop every so often to confirm progress to the signaller. On some long stretches this could be a real problem because we were told they had a maximum speed of 25 mph and trying to fit them in was a real squeeze. Then one day a tamper removed half the platform coping at Rainham, apparently doing 47 mph at the time.

I always like to view cab footage. As a one-time track/technical trainer based at Beckenham Junction (now decades ago), the trainers' office and several training rooms backed onto the track, so we saw a train passing by beneath us every couple of minutes. These were really great days - as well as a Cab Pass I never had a better job than this - the days just 'flew' by... I later applied for a position on "God's Wonderful Railway" at Paddington, which was not at first to my liking... However, a most understanding Chief Engineer extended Day-Release facilities for this frustrated civil engineer and I - eventually - gained a Degree. One thing I recall from the cab was I believe between Orpington and London Bridge. Our train and another approaching seemed to be on a collision course... The driver never batted an eyelid of course - and at the last second the trains entered "running" crossovers and immediately swung to the left and clear of each other!

This may not be an official route learning video, but it's a great tutorial on how to smoothly Ride The Yellows. Of course, driving a tamper squeezed between scheduled revenue trains probably gives you lots of practice at doing so--perhaps more than you'd like. Cheers from Wisconsin!

I’ve had to add that. There have been issues with other cab ride videos on other channels, so I’ve disclaimed myself to avoid trouble Glad you enjoyed the ride. I try to avoid riding yellows where possible. It becomes a habit too easy to cancel the AWS and not pay proper attention to the aspect. But if I have to, I try to avoid getting too close to the red

Crystal Palace is my local station. I've used it lots. Lovely to see it and the other parts of the route form the cab, thank you! Were you at Palace around 6am? At 12:56 I can see the Overground service is terminated in bay platform 5 - that appears to be only for the 06.02 service, the others normally go from platform 3.

Very nice video, many thanks. Nice to see these less usual movements. When at Bickley Junction you got a route 5 indicator is that because the route 4 would be for the slightly later turnout on to the Tonbridge slow loop at that location?
@emmo999

Yes that’s correct. Originally, they were both single line, the down where the slows now run, and the up where we went. They were both doubled to provide extra capacity for the Eurostars, and when platforms 6,7 and 8 at Orpington were made, meaning all “slow” traffic was on the same side

@@emmo999 Ah, thanks so much for that clarification. With standard junction indicators it's often possible to work out from the track layout what the options are going to be, but when it comes to theatre boxes, that can be another matter entirely. Sometimes things like "DF" or "US" can be self-explanatory, and of course platform routings at larger stations, but the things like the "C" you mentioned: that only comes with *proper* route knowledge! How many other routes are indicated from the Balham departure signal? There's another "C" at TVC 703 towards the end of Streatham Hill Depot. I imagine that's the same routing "Crystal Palace" -- presumably as opposed to turning out at Leigham Junction for Tulse Hill and then either towards Peckham Rye, or from Tulse Hill north Jn via Herne Hill on the Blackfriars route?
@emmo999

Yes indeed. And remembering all possible route indications at all the junctions a train driver covers is why drivers must maintain their routes regularly

The site to the right was originally an anti-aircraft battery protecting the junction, and marked the start of "bomb alley" in 1940. It then became very hush-hush, with armed guards, and then radar development and testing. What it is now is anybody's guess. The opposite side of the entire junction was almost as malodorous, a pig farm! Not far above is the Catholic Church where the last Emperor of France, Napoleon III, and his wife are buried.
