@Quincy Lam they only declared a pan pan and was likely not deemed a tru emergency. Also, Air Canada does not have flight to/from Hamilton, Bufallo, or Niagara, NY, to have ground supports in place to handle the influx of all those passengers. The better decision was to fly an extra 20 minutes to the aircrafts originating airport.

Something like this happened on a flight I was on ages ago. Plane took off normally, but there was a weird roaring noise during the climb and the pressure in the cabin felt wrong. The captain suddenly announced we were turning around because one of the cabin doors hadn't properly closed. I don't know if he meant it was unlocked or it actually hadn't fully closed but it must not have been a major malfunction because we took off in the same plane two hours later.
@Marix498

Because it is not serious. The problem is with presurization, when the leak is significant. The pilots, and the computers control if aircraft presurrizes correctly during climb. If not, they need to level off, or descent. When the destination airport is realatively close the flight may be even continued to its destination I think.

Since the doors are plugs the risk of the door opening when pressurized is zero. Couldn't they just lock it? Or is it because they don't want to risk anyone even getting close to the door incase of some freak it opened? Or maybe it's just procedure? Just curious not being critical.
@sylviaelse5086

I think the issue is that one never knows for sure what the problem is. Perhaps someone just failed to close the door properly. But what if it's a structural failure of the door frame, which could be made worse by fiddling with the door? Best to carry out such activities on the ground.

@Marix498
Жыл бұрын
What do you mean to freeze the plane? First of all, usually, the autopilot "freezes" the airplane. Even if the pilot flies manually, he concentrates on flying. The other pilot is monitoring and communicating with ATC/ground. In case of demanding situation, they both concentrate on flying, trouble shooting, ang "freezing" the plane in the air. Communication might be even stopped for a while, because flying is the priority. Next priority is communication, and the last thing is navigating on their own.

You'd think sharing such close airspace, there wouldn't be these subtle differences in ATC phraseology. I remember the big push to make "line up and wait" a standard rather than "position and hold," for example. Is "radar contact" a crime against Canada? LOL At a minimum, nothing good can come from any differences in language. I flew BOS/DTW for work many times and, if I recall, we went through a segment of Canada's ATC normally. With so much cross border traffic, we should be speaking the same language.

Is this pilot discresion to continue the flight or are they required to declare PAN-PAN here?
@UnshavenStatue
Жыл бұрын
Probably required. At the very least, the pilots must assume that they can no longer pressurize, so 10k feet is their max, as they stated. Maybe on shorter flights they could cruise at 10k feet, but not for 2-3 hours down to Florida. Also, they have a preference to return to their maintenance base at Tronno anyways. And, quite aside from the pressurization issues, a door problem could also indicate aerodynamic contamination, possibly causing control issues. So yes it's probably require to declare and land at nearest suitable airport.
