I agree it sounds a little odd, but they probably do it for health and safety reasons. Like, if you dumped your life jacket on day 1, or were burning candles in your room, they'd have no way of knowing unless they enforced routine inspections. It's more like living in a dorm, I think. When I was in college some kid almost burned his dorm building down with one too many heat lamps, that he had because of the iguana he smuggled in and kept under the bed. The rule might seem silly... until someone ignores it and all hell breaks loose.

Even when the Big Wigs came around, the Chiefs would tell them the whole joke and they got a Kick of it even to one point, I made cookies for an Officers wife after she got a craving when she had given afyer birth and requested to " Room 213 Cookies" he brought home, heck they didn't like doing it, we didn't like people going through our things, so why not make it fun.

And how does a pringles can in the bin have anything to do with that?
@Fazwick
6 ай бұрын
@@Alucard-gt1zf Like he said, it depends on the person doing inspection (assholes gonna be assholes). And failing room inspections is not that big of a deal, most of the time company "demands" officers find violations or they think they did not do their job, so sometimes officers just put random infractions in record "Garbage can filled with trash, asked crew to empty." Mostly for record keeping. With regards to garbage bin, it's normally expected to be empty as on ship they don't encourage you keeping garbage in the room for long period of time. Good practice to empty it daily, as we want to reduce biological/fire hazards or infestation risks. Depending on ship managements style, garbage cans are also color coded for what type of garbage goes in it, so if he threw a pringles can into a paper only bin that can also be a violation. Garbage segregation is taken seriously on ships.

International waters don’t exempt you from the laws of the country the boat comes from. If you wanted the real answer, it’s because cruise ship workers are salaried. It has nothing to do with international waters, and everything to do with how wages work. They literally do the same thing to office workers. They trick you into switching to salary and then constantly try to force you into overtime, which you now don’t get because you’re salaried.

I worked cruises way back in 1981-82. The ship’s compliment was divided into _Ship_ and _Hotel_ . The compliment of one did not oversee or direct the other except where theere was an unavoidable overlap, such as Shore Excursions where there was necessary coordination with and directing of the tendering of passengers. For this reason, the SE staff were considered Officers and enjoyed their privileges such as a private cabin. There were no cabin inspections.

For safety because altering your room could cause a fire hazard (think about putting a cloth over a lamp or something or moving electronics drom one outlet to another) you also need to be able to quickly evacuate, so no mess on the floor that cpuld obstruct you. Also when you get MLC (maritime labour convention) inspection all crew spaces need to be clean and comfortable.

He woke me up ranting that alcohol wasn't allowed and I was in trouble for my area being "disorderly". I was mad af, but I managed to calmly request that his supervisor come evaluate the situation. Kind of like "You really aren't supposed to enter my area of the room other than access to the bathroom, right? And yet you did. Basically waking me up in the middle of the night over an unlocked locker and some beers?" He left. Never bothered me again.

They do cabin inspections doing drills but the once a month thing is called the "Master's Sanitary Inspection" the captain goes and checks crew quarters to see if they are straight and clean. Also trash has to be separated on ships so odds are the Pringle can was mixed with something else.

These guys are living in complete luxury compared to a Navy vessel. Honestly the rooms are bigger than most officers would have. Typically ships will have triple decker bunk beds with like 6 people living in section not much bigger than his room.

Brings back memories from my days in Air Force tech school, and yes we would fail room inspections if they saw even a single piece of garbage in the trash can.

Aboard the Celebrity infinity ship in Cartagena Columbia, I was awoken by the two Colombian military dudes with AKs and a shivering (coke withdrawals?) German Shepard at around 6:30am, about an hour after going to bed. I stood in the hallway in my boxers as the poor dog was brought into my room for a cabin inspection. Ship Security officers love targeting entertainment staff and they were happy to oblige the military on me. No drugs were found. Yay for Cabin inspections and coked out dogs looking for their next hit. Poor little fella.

The moral of the story is, always leave one Pringle in the bottom of your Pringles can, safely tucked away on your snack shelf, legal as heck.

Trash in the trash bin that's a hit, laundry in the laundry basket that's another hit. Light in the lightbulb, failed inspection.
