Many types of portable cord are identified by series of letters. SJO cable, SJT cable, and SOOW cable are just a few examples. But what you may not know is that these letters can tell you a lot about the cable. From weather resistance to materials, and even voltage rating, those letters deliver a lot of information about the appropriate uses for each type of portable cable.
Here are some of the most common letters used on portable cord, and their meanings:
S -- Service, 600 volts
SJ -- Junior Service, 300 volts
O -- Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket
OO -- Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket and Oil-Resistant Insulation
W -- Weather and Water-Resistant
T -- Thermoplastic
E - Elastomer
