I loved how Jason always played this insanely complex stuff but always smiled and ran around like a kid playing air guitar just for fun or something.

You can find The footage of a guitar expo here on KZitem where Jason and Marty are playing in the Carvin room of this hotel in LA that I went to, it’s super cool because the sound is so clean in that room. Great post though this one is one of the best examples of how Jason was such a developed player at such a young age.

@Glutonid Well that's actually a pretty common pattern that Marty tends to use when he is going over a progession(The Ninja, Tornado of Souls[Megadeth]) and it's pretty much just a two string arpeggio with three notes going up and down. I guess Jason just decided to use it while Marty plays rythm.

Tony Fredianelli (of Third Eye Blind) fame sounds VERY similar to Marty Friedman. Check out Apocrypha's "Forgotten Scroll" album which was produced was Marty. Tony's vibrato and note choice are very Friedman-ish...a real rarity since most guys at the time were doing the "Yngwie" thing. Tony still has a little Friedman-esque style in his playing with Turd Eye Blind...weird but true.

To be perfectly honest, back in the mid-eighties they were a somewhat common guitar in metal circles and you didn't really think about them becoming a collector's guitar. I had the Carvin X100B half-stack also and I really miss having that one as well. I was dumb and traded it in for a Crate - Blue Voodoo, which was alright, but they're not as collectable as older Carvins. Carvin has just reissued the V220's again and the X100B amps both recently, but they are pricey.

@markcball Agreed 100%, unless someone like Jeff Loomis decided to play power chord songs like Green Day I agree completely. ANd I love this song and its mix between Metal and then that whole Blues solo thing is amazing! And more genres shows off the skills of the guitarist rather than segmenting them to one style! And thats one thing that makes Jason Becker one of my top fav guitarists!

The guitar styles of Cacophony and Racer X were very different. Racer X was more hard-rock based with meticulous scale based harmonized passages and a very "American" sound. Cacophony,in comparison, was more in the heavy-metal vein with more of an emphasis on harmonized arpeggio themes and Eastern melodies. Both bands kicked ass. No one sounds like Marty Friedman though...he has a very unique style. A cool video.
