Cool cadmium fact, back in the early 20th century a Japanese prefecture experienced mass cadmium poisoning in the water leading to a disease called "itai itai". Something about reacting to heavy metal poisoning by calling it "ouch owie disease" just strikes me as funny

I like to think that the artist imagery used is literal *and* figurative. "Wanting doesn't matter when there's mouths to feed" Many forms of art, from illustrating to writing, don't pay well enough to provide comfortable living. But I feel this also extends more generally to anyone wanting to make change in the world; making a difference doesn't pay well. Following the status quo does. It requires sacrifice. But like art in all it's forms, is necessary. I think the use of cadmium mirrors this- it is a dangerous substance, but some artists still use it because they think it's worth the risk for a beautiful work of art. "I kept a bullet in the chamber for a rainy day/but whats the point of planning for it anyway?" "I've got too many colors for a shade of grey" The world makes us feel like crap. It makes sense to want to leave it. But we all have "colors," something to contribute to the world. Eventually we will leave it one way or another ("what's the point of planning for it"), so while we're here, we may as well contribute, even a little- "make it autumn every day," for even a single person. Sorry if this was rant-y, all over the place, sappy, or completely wrong, but I just wanted to share my thoughts and interpretations of this beautiful song. I'd love to hear other people's interpretations :)

Yes!! I totally agree with this analysis: cadmium yellow is super toxic to breathe in, and it’s a rlly great literal and figurative representation for the pain of an art career’s sacrifice and the fever-like fatigue of going past your breaking point until you’re super burnt out. The light fading from her eyes works not only for death and illness, but the loss of passion in a craft you’ve been forced to do too much (be it for assignments, completionism, or just to be able to sell enough to get by). In chasing something so beautiful and colourful, she’s become greyed out herself from pushing herself too far, with the only colours being inside her making her sick. (This could also be about pursuing projects with painful memories attached, like trying to finish a work you started with a friend you no longer have, ect. however I could also just be bullshitting that) The ‘what’s the point of planning for it anyway, I can make it autumn every day’ also seems like a good representation of a false sense of control in being unable to change career/mentality which eventually brings more harm in its monotony and other unhealthy strifes. Idk, of course this is all just my own dive into it, but this song is really beautiful in every aspect and deserves its attention to detail to be acknowledged… just like in the song itself. The piece is deeply resonating, and one of the best songs I’ve ever seen, both in its music video and the music itself.
@digster2344

An afterthought I wanted to mention: I understand that following the status quo, in many situations (e.g. office worker, store clerk, factory worker) doesn't pay well either, but it too requires sacrifice, even if we don't choose to sacrifice willingly. In art this probably holds more true more often, as evident by Hollywood, but again, not always.

if i had a nickel for each time a song about toxic colours featuring kasane teto was released, i'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice. it will assuredly be a banger song. Cadmium is a malleable metal, with an atomic number of 48. It is highly reactive as it slowly reacts with Oxygen and reacts with most acids. Cadmium is highly toxic when inhaled, giving flu-like symptoms and damage the lungs (high amount, short period of time), or kidney, bone and lung disease (low levels, long period of time). This happens when inhaling Cadmium powder or dust, probably when handling old/antique paints. Despite all of this, Cadmium Red, Orange and Yellow have been very popular paints since the 1800's, used by famous artists like Vincent van Gogh and Bob Ross. Liquid form Cadmium paints are still unsafe, as you should avoid getting it on your skin to avoid accidental digestion (source: googling a whole lot).

Wanting to leave your mark on the world using bright and vibrant colors to stand out, warm colors as a form of warmth in life, but the cadmium can take away the life as well. Bonus points of having an interpretation with Teto as an artificial being, wanting to bring life, feel warmth that she can’t feel, at a cost. AUFH I just love media with good messages involving life and death and purpose and .

I can NOT get over that section in the middle when the pace picks up and the colors keep switching from high saturation to monotone, it's so short but, but combined with how the previous section cuts off at the end, it feels like the problem being ignored is finally catching up to her and she's forced to face it one way or another. It's the payoff to a buildup we didn't even know was there, but it does it's job beautifully. I would listen to an entire song based on that section if i could, it's fucking phenomenal.

i keep coming back to this, for me it really hits the pain of putting your everything into art, bearing your soul can be poison sometimes, some of the most genuine pieces of the self sculpted can hurt like hell when you see them ignored/misintepreted/exploited, worst of all forgotten, asking if it was all worth it is so hard to do and painfully it always ends up as you having to define for yourself if it was worth it, and you have to answer yes, you have to choose not to forget yourself and trust others will follow, love your work Jamie

The lyrics in this flow extremely well. I have such a low expectation of smaller artist using synths because they're so amateurishly written and don't flow at all, but this feels professional. It is like a wave rushes over me when I listen to your music, the kind of wave that just pulls away any defenses you have put up, allowing me to let it all out, and learn to feel again. As I listen to the different lyrics across your music, I am reminded of my life, regardless if those lyrics perfectly reflect my life or if they have similar feelings, it makes me feel. It is so beautiful ;-;

Beautiful song. Interesting range of messages. My take away was off someone who works in a factory making paint the conditions are terrible but the person needs money to survive and feed thier family even if it means they become ill. At the same time, the person dreams of using the same paint to create beautiful art. Wishing they could be successful as an artist so they could do something they love and live a better life. The ending is smiling again, dreaming of this better life since that is all she can do.

I love the double meaning of the "Make the water work" line at 1:02 and 3:47. In the first case it refers to watercolors, or possibly paintings of watery landscapes, but in the second it moreso refers to Teto's own "Waterworks".

This is amazing!! I knew it was a song about artists immediately, and I love your lyrics; thank you for putting them in the description so I can read them slowly and process them like poetry and get emotional. xD I immediately knew it was an artist song 'cuz besides the visuals, I also remember purchasing cadmium paints for my art class 'cuz it was required for some painting/art homework. The line about "having mouths to feed" definitely made me think about how a lot of artists are struggling right now and even really famous artists who made an impact on the industry are now delivering food with Doordash or something and getting bitten by dogs. (There was a post about that.) I'm an artist, so this song hit me right in the feels, but the whole thing made me think about "dreams deferred" and fills me with a bittersweet feeling. HOWEVER, it's beautiful that artists continue to persist anyway and we get amazing stuff like this that reminds us of what's important and that we're not alone in this. I'm a newer listener but I've been loving your lyrics/MVs/songs, and I really liked the sped up part in this song too! Also I just love Teto's higher voice in general, in the chorus, so I'll definitely be listening to this a lot. Instant fave. Thanks for sharing yet another banger!

i cant express how much i like your music🥺🥺🥺 im so happy i found your channel, you're killing it UPD‼️ ive got a close look into the lyrics (cuz i was just dancing to the song without a single thought in my head this whole week) and i cant even express how much it resonated with me... im an traditional artist and it greatly affected my life both in bad and good ways. one of them is this exact feeling to leave something behind and finish all my works to the point i like them (at least to not be ashemed i created the piece), and also this really strange feeling of my "normal self" and my "art self" mixing in together and fight inside me, causing struggles and inner disputes over my life style... but this is not all. i've also got through a really tough suicide attempt a few years ago and barely lived, practically laying on my deathbed for 3 days straight (altho, as you can see im still vibing with you guys, healthy and alive💪) of course in this awful period i didnt draw at all for many months and i felt really bad about it, as if something great that brought me joy left ny body once and for all (or so i thought back then) and the little sped up chorus really resonated with these feelings of mine the death and the art you leave behind, the spark literally fading away from you and your body (whether a literal life or just your interest in art), you feel it running away like a sand running through your fingers... and it's scary. all those hours you spend on your work without having spare time for your familly and your own happiness. was it worth it? are you ready to die right here and there, leaving everything forever in the places where you settled it to be? do you want to keep fighting, mixing these colors, or just leave with only greys left behind? these are just my feelings and thoughts that had been awoken by this wonderful song ( i really REALLY like it despite how depressed it makes me feel sometimes) thanks for listening to my ted talk😳
