Matthew Hunter shows how to identify yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria), and talks about it's range and uses. Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) is the only plant in North America with enough caffeine to have a significant effect. This shrub is identified by it's evergreen, oval shaped leaves with scalloped leaf margins. It's is multi-stemmed understory shrub with smooth, gray bark and a "scrubby" appearance. Male and female flowers are found of different plant. Female plants will often be loaded with small, juicy red berries about the size of a pea. Yaupon holly leaves are dried or roasted(by a campfire or oven) and used to make tea similar to yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), a related plant sold in stores. This plant grows along the Gulf Coast states, from East Texas to Florida, north to roughly 32°N latitude. Further north that that, this plant is still used extensively in landscaping, where you can find the "weeping" yaupon holly and dwarf yaupon holly plants. Watch part 2 to see how to roast this plant by a campfire and make yaupon holly tea.
