I really appreciate the breakdown of the hard barres like G and C, thats detrimental knowledge and few say it correctly. Studyin the cage system and as soon as I get tired of one shape finding the next and correlating the root notes has taught me an insane amount on the guitar in a few months, I had lots of experience prior, but just played riffs and random stuff for a long time, then a few years ago i decided to learn classically. Now I am here, and I know nearly all major notes on the fretboard, I have learned the first pentatonic shape, and the first major shape both being E. That combined with my prior knowledge of techinque I learned through riffs, has given me a unique style and Im only growing. I knew somehow when I got my first guitar that I was gonnna get good someday.

Your videos are outstanding. I'm approaching guitar from a keyboard background. Why am I using a chord in one shape to play another chord? Is it possible to stick with one shape for every barre chord,? I'm seeing the translation of keyboard to fretboard with your videos, although such a direct video in your style would be amazing. This should have a couple million views... unbelievable. Thanks very much. I'm trying to understand how the scales now relate to the CAGED system, pentatonic and others. This helps me play songs all over the fret board, and I can practice scales, but is it a good idea to relate the CAGED system to what I'm doing with my scales practice. I'm a beginner who's only just started with some of the theory and methodology recently, as in the first year I've just been working on open chords and playing along to songs best I can to improve speed. Thanks for any help you can provide and I plan to now join your patreon. This video and the very basic one on identifying chords in keys blew me away. Thanks again!!

Wait- so the other G shape(the one with just the bar and high e string) can only be played an octave up from the original G chord? Or can it be used across the fretboard too??
@Samjamguitar

It technically is the open G chord! You also have to remember that these shapes Change location depending on the chord/key 🔑 these examples are all in G but if you wanted to play a B chord for all 5 shapes they would be in a different location entirely... this makes knowing the root note location essential. if you know them in one key then you know them in all keys👌

How would it work with A ?
@Samjamguitar
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Erick, When using CAGED it is important to think of the Root note first and then attach the corresponding shape. in this video all the examples are in the Key of G and therefore you find a G note and depending where that G note falls on the fretboard this would then dictate the correct shape. to do this in the key of A the process would be exactly the same, Find an A root note and attach the correct shape (this is briefly covered at the end of each CAGED lesson. and if you are struggling to identify Notes on the fretboard quickly then i would definitely recommend this Lesson kzitem.info/news/bejne/0aaDnYmXjHyQfYY . I hope this helped and if you have any further questions don't hesitate to leave it in the comments!

Hi Albert, the heart of this concept is really Just moving the open chords you already know around the Fretboard to make new chords. Provided you know these chords and can play Barre chords easily while also being able to identify the names of the notes on the E-A-D strings it's actually quite simple. If any of the three steps I have mentioned above are not ready then you may struggle. I have videos on all of these topics so be sure to watch these and allow enough time to fully absorb each subject before moving on.👍
@maxmaxed2887
Ай бұрын
The final G shape is actually much easier to play than A shape. A shape requires 3 fingers to be placed on the same fret which is basically impossible, they simply do not fit together so close. So you end up doing double barre with your index finger covering that fret, which sometimes silences the 6th string.
@Samjamguitar
Ай бұрын
three fingers can definitely be placed within the same fret to form the A shape! it just takes practise. the more common approach is 1st and 3rd fingers (3rd finger barring 3 notes) and if placed correctly you will also be able to sound the high E string also!
@maxmaxed2887
Ай бұрын
@@Samjamguitar I can only do it on first 4 frets. My fingers are too large for the rest to do A shape
@Samjamguitar

In that case the 1st and 3rd (sometimes 4th) barre approach is best!
