400 years ago in 1623 the first mechanical calculator was invented by Wilhelm Schickard. Not only the four basic arithmetic operations were supported, but also the calculation of square roots. In this video I'm demonstrating how that was performed by calculating the square root of 13 as an example.
The algorithm is based on the first binomial formula and is equivalent to the shifting square root algorithm, which also can be performed manually, but is here supported by the mechanical calculator, which is a faster and easier than the manual calculation.
