I didn’t realize how much you like using a calculator. I use the one that’s on my phone all of the time when I’m at home and I love it. At work I use a real calculator because I have one handy at the desk I work at. I really don’t have a preference on whether it’s an old fashioned calculator or the one on my phone. I just use what is available at the time.

My first calculator was a simple red LED affair, which took a 9v battery (as I recall) and which my aunt bought for us. Can't recall the manufacturer: perhaps Sharp. Wish I still had it.

Oh wow, I haven't encountered a 9v calculator!

@ThriftStoreBibles which is weird (a 9v calculator) because I also recall having one whose shtick was it ran on a little paper pellet soaked in salt water. And I know they had potato-powered calculators at some point.

@@DavidWilson-hd6iz I'm thinking now the Tater-Power smoke detectors I installed might have been a bad idea.

My first calculator was an HP-21. My parents were generous because that wasn't a cheap calculator, although IIRC it cost the same as TI's SR-50, which was around at the same time (1975). Used to argue with friends over whether Reverse Polish Notation was preferable to Algebraic Notation. That was sort of the "Catholic versus Protestant" religious argument of the calculator world. 😄

I learned something today! I'd never heard of RPN before. I just watched a video of somebody demonstrating it. Very interesting, and I can see how that could lead to some "religious" arguments!

I had my sister bring back a Casio Scientific Calculator (specifically the model Classwiz fx-85GT X) back from the United Kingdom because I heard (and it turns out it is true) the order of operations used differs (North American calculators usually conform to what you'd call PEDMAS). I just found it interesting that calculators would differ depending on where in the world one purchases it.

I've seen some demonstrations where calculators come up with different answers for the same equation, which is surprising!

@@ThriftStoreBibles Exactly, one would think calculators would be standardized but apparently not.

You'd make a great actuary! :) The IIS is pretty much the universal bread & butter model, very useful and cheap. Never liked the newer ones shaped like the 36. As you mentioned, the cover snaps on weird, and the shape is just weird to me...reminds me of an owl or an extra-wide foot or something. Do you have any of those old LED (with red display) or VFD (blue-green) calculators? They're much easier to see in low light, but of course won't have those parentheses and other advanced features that you prefer.

Something about that cover doesn't feel quite as dependable - I suspect it might break eventually. Never felt that way about the sliders. I don't have any older ones like that, but they do look cool. I saw one used when I was looking for calculators, I was tempted but I collect enough things already I suppose!
