Jerry Rosa just gave you the nicest endorsement ever. Not just as a luthier but as a Gentleman. Peace.

Keep them chisels sharp Caleb, then you'll find shaping those braces will be much easier and more accurate. Also you could use a finger plane to help with the shaping. It's coming on nicely.

The chisel must be sharpened. And look on KZitem how Luthiers remove excess wood from braces with chisels: what plane of the chisel is used, and how they accomplish it.And the width of the cutting edge really should be like 17 mm, or if we talk in inches: about maybe 0 ,67 ".Something like this. “Elementary Watson.”

Fascinating to watch you carve the bracing, my current project we only needed to make braces for the back. Thanks for bringing us along👍

Interesting choice to scallop north of the X joint. I’m curious as to why you chose to go true flat top. Is there a benefit?

With a chisel, when they work there, the flat part of it should be located at the bottom, but for some reason you keep it at the top.

Not when your scalloping braces. Its not like making a mortise and tenon joint when your scalloping but more like using the chisel like a planer blade. Best!

@@neilfromclearwaterfl81 Here the master scallops the springs (Martin spring arrangement), and as I understand it, the flat part of the hand chisel is at the bottom of the middle of the video (link to it below) it is clearly visible. Probably both the chisel and the hand plane have the same arrangement of cutting edges. For some reason, some people sometimes do it differently: they turn the hand chisel over when removing excess wood. Maybe it is more convenient for them in some cases, but as a rule, the flat part of the chisel is at the bottom: this was probably how this tool was invented many centuries ago. Well, of course, a hand chisel should be sharpened so that it shaves off the hair on your hand. Then the work of removing excess wood will go easily and quickly, and bring joy to the one who does this work. Only in the videos on how to sharpen chisels on KZitem, "perverts" often shoot, who for some reason greatly complicate this process, use 3000-grit 8000-grit) sandpaper before polishing (you can stop at 2000-grit 2500-grit, or use complicated devices for this purpose (for sharpening chiesel) that cost a lot of money, without which you can do. Please forgive me for my "passion" in typing a message).Link:kzitem.info/news/bejne/rbBjmIOCmJReooo&ab_channel=MattSysko

@@user-oo2wf7cf6h And just like Caleb he was using the bevel of the chisel for the scalloping. For the paring or beveling of the top edges its optional whether to use the flat or bevel. Best!

@@neilfromclearwaterfl81 If you noticed how much faster, more efficiently, and how evenly the master managed to remove the unnecessary wood in the link that I forwarded to you the day before, then you can guess that this is how this work should be done, and not with the flat part of the chisel up. In some cases, when working with wood, of course, when using a chisel, its flat part is held up, that is, vice versa.

@@user-oo2wf7cf6h Caleb's video was from well over a year ago not that long after he started his apprenticeship and it was his first guitar build which he started back then in order to learn how to get better at repairing them. In 40 years you'll likely see him start using the riskier methods a 40 year veteran may use but only "At Times When Appropriate". At Martin Guitar's we understand that speed is the goal and they will use riskier methods to get it done fast since they produce volume while at Rosa they only produced commissioned guitars one at a time and won't use riskier methods since they don't want to waste even a single top or side. We also understand Martin Guitar would have edited the video if he slipped using the riskier method, damaging the top so badly that he had to get a new one to start work on for the video. We know that over the years the defect rate at Martin has at times been abysmal with things as unfathomable as bridges getting attached in the wrong location making correct intonation impossible without relocating the bridge and perhaps also the bridge plate, undersized bridge plates/inadequate bracing with tops cracking and developing belly bulge, etc, etc yet these expensive guitars passed inspection by their "Masters" to be sold to their dealers and customers. Poetic justice that Caleb and Jerry ended up successfully fixing a number of these guitars that the "Masters" at Martin had declared unfixable. So Caleb has at times fixed the mistakes made by Martin Guitar "Masters". Thank you though for providing the link to a video showing that even Martin's "Master" did the actual end scallops using the beveled edge of the chisel the same as Caleb did. Best!

?? Question: Would it be better to trim the backplate so it doesn't touch any braces? For wood expansion to keep anything from being broken or for sound quality being muted.
